I’ve made a list of current Point venues that I know aren’t the property of clearly pro-hunting landowners – it’s rather short!

    Larkhill – MoD
    Hexham racecourse
    Bangor-On-Dee racecourse
    Ffos Las racecourse
    Fakenham racecourse

The venues would be the dealbreaker if hunting was banned.

Manpower could theoretically be employed by an expanded Point industry infrastructure out of revenues no longer going towards Hunts, but if there’s nowhere to actually race….

If you could add another three or four from somewhere Ian, do you think a viable P2P industry could be sustained?

Would there be enough support from the paying public (it’s expensive enough as it is), competing horses and betting turnover to make it worthwhile enough for bookmakers to attend?

They would be required to be travelling from one end of the country to the other to compete?

The last four might not be with us much longer, if the Cheltenham and the whip thread in the Horse Racing forum is anything to go by!

    griff,

262 Pointers ran one weekend earlier this month – there are clearly still people who want to own Pointers, train them and ride them.

Points still get decent crowds, especially the spring ones, where bookmakers do alright.

And you already get Pointers travelling from one side of the country to another most weekends.

There are circa 140 fixtures this season, mostly coming up with six, seven, eight, nine, nine, 15, six, eight and 11 fixtures the next nine weekends.

Any post hunting attempt to keep it going would probably involve a massive cull, with maybe just a couple of fixtures on average a week end from the start of November through to the start of June, with a total of 60-70 fixtures in all.

Larkhill, owned by the MoD, currently has seven scheduled fixtures a season – I think the once-a-year venues would go and there would be an attempt to create more regular-use hubs like Larkhill.

    No easy task, though.

‘Directly of course would be those employed by the hunts and many rely on the hunt for accommodation.

The abattoirs would of course benefit, but feed, veterinary, tack and many other businesses would suffer a fair hit.’

Any benefit to abattoirs would surely be a one off? It also assumes there’d be mass slaughter of animals in the event of a total hunting ban, would there be? I don’t know. Regardless, plenty of people ride horses for pleasure and therefore need the services of equine businesses. If the vets end up with a bit of spare time on their hands they’ll soon find work, there’s a massive shortage in the industry.

For those who would lose their job and/or accommodation, well that’s the danger of relying on an industry that many people find to be morally indefensible, one day you might lose the argument. Plus times change, we didn’t keep coal mines open out of sympathy to the workers for example.

45 runners at Fontwell Park today and 37 at Hereford.

There were 53 at Alnwick, 44 at Larkhill, and 42 at Garthorpe plus 44 at Kingston Blount on the Saturday.

All is relative and there’s life in Pointing still.

It looks like trail hunting will be banned now:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g9y20j259o

I am not sure what that will mean for the point to point scene (with which I am not familiar) but Mr Davies, late of this parish, seemed to think it would be bad news.

I hope ID is doing well, if he is reading.
