I voted to ban trail hunting as soon as I read that it is being used as a smokescreen for the illegal hunting of foxes.
I live in a country lane backing onto fields and have had the hounds run rife across our garden chasing foxes. At the time I had a shetland sheepdog who I had just called indoors. There had been a few cases in our local paper of the hounds ripping small domestic dogs to pieces and I can honestly say I was very nervous that day seeing so many out of control dogs.
PS ..I also love Foxes, I think the rabbits do more damage and the foxes keep their numbers down where we live.
We don’t harm the bunnies either.I hope Point to Point will survive any ban, it would be a shame to lose it but the hunting must stop.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...February 23, 2023 at 18:57 #1636733Thanks for that Cork, interesting to know.
I too would be interested to hear from someone on the other side of the fence.
February 23, 2023 at 19:35 #1636735Going off topic but I am glad to see the guidance says you must kill any trapped mink. These vicious predators were released from fur farms by animal rights activists who no doubt thought they were doing something noble.
And what happened? They bred like wildfire and have wreaked havoc. It is generally agreed they are responsible for the near extinction of water voles and have not been good news for several other species as well. They even raid kingfisher nests.
Well intentioned people. The trouble they cause!!
February 23, 2023 at 19:38 #1636736Getting back on topic, there are Points this weekend at: Kingston Blount, Larkhill, Garthorpe and Alnwick.
These race meetings are afaik being staged by four local Hunts and presumably the venues are being made available because the owners of the land are supporters of hunting, though Larkhill is actually owned by the MoD.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 23, 2023 at 20:07 #1636739Three tracks in Scotland, Overton, Friars Haugh and Mosshouses.
Overton is in the hands of the Young Family. They run the farm, the farm shop and butchers as well as their own racing stable, stable star Ardera Cross. Well committed to the sport and while there are enough horses to run there then the track will continue.
Friars Haugh is on land presumably owned by Duke Of Roxburghe, though I’m not 100% on that front. Seems fairly healthy at present.
Mosshouses, which holds the Lauderdale Hunt meeting, has lurched along in recent years. I have heard rumours of closure in years past but it remains on the calendar though field sizes often suffer because of quick ground at their mid-April fixture.
Fife Hunt race at Overton these days. The owner of Balcormo Mains died a few years ago, the family weren’t keen on continuing and the loss of meetings and subsequent revenue through Covid knocked the course on the head.

I deliberated over starting this thread for about a week – I’m glad I did in the end.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 23, 2023 at 21:18 #1636744The lack, so far, of anyone passionately leaping to the defence of hunting says a lot I think, especially amongst a group of people which is more likely than the wider public to contain someone sympathetic to the cause.
Do speak up if you are here!
February 23, 2023 at 21:23 #1636745My thoughts exactly, tbh, Richard.
In fact, thus far we’ve had the reverse – people who live in relatively rural areas like yourself and Triptych who haven’t got a good word to say about the activity.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 23, 2023 at 21:25 #1636746I’m fairly sure such people do exist on this forum. I recall a fair bit of disapproval when people (myself included) have suggested National Hunt should be renamed Jumps.
February 23, 2023 at 21:36 #1636748Where are they, then?

February 23, 2023 at 21:55 #1636754That was then, this is now!
Never look back, always look forward!
There must be a forumite here in 2023 ready to vote to repeal and make the case on this thread?
Maybe gamble was once savaged by a fox as a child?
He’s my main hope!

February 23, 2023 at 22:17 #1636758Have just bumped a previous discussion about hunting on the main forum. Not just Tank in favour of hunting there.
February 24, 2023 at 07:28 #1636814Interesting voting and views so far – all current opinions welcomed.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 24, 2023 at 09:00 #1636818Out of interest Ian, are the votes anonymous or can you seen them as poll creator? I’ve never made a poll so I don’t know.
February 24, 2023 at 09:40 #1636820Anonymous, Richard, which I think on balance is a good thing as it gives people confidence to vote without consequences.
That said, I admire those like yourself who nail your colours to the mast.
What surprises me is that, far from making the repeal argument here, no one has even voted for it.
You’d think on a racing forum there might be more pockets of sympathy – but not so far in the here and now (which is what counts)!
