….Alot gets spoken of super sires and their value and rightly so i suppose with Danehill and Sadlers Wells producing most of the best in recent times. But what about the mares which also had a hand
I dont know nearly as much about broodmares as i do about sires to the point of sexism. To not know how many foals you could expect a top broodmare (name one!) to produce in a twenty year stint is lame of me as its so few in comparison. I hear that Ouija Board is in foal to Kingmambo and this excites me
I’d love to have first refusal on that so long as its under fifty grand!
as this is my perfect match up, but who’s yours? More interested in the mare side though
October 16, 2007 at 12:22 #119831yes, I’m always curious about the offspring of some of the racemares that I’ve followed over the years, and it’s a case of trawling through the internet. Seem to remember a mating between Dayjur and the mare that beat him at the breeders cup and wonder how successful the resulting foal was, and I’ve always been fascinated by the ‘Dove’ line of horses, also Dubacilla and Lady Rebecca…

October 16, 2007 at 15:00 #119869Ouija Board and Monjeu would be pretty special. Wouldnt mind that offspring in my yard as a 2 year old!

Abbajabba, NV?
Apart from the obvious Slightly Dangerous and Reprocolor lines, I have always had a soft spot for the offspring of Where’s Carol…..particularly at that opening meeting at Doncaster!
October 16, 2007 at 17:05 #119896Safely Kept (BC winner) was never covered by Dayjur, which is a shame as it would have been a good quiz question! She did ok as a broodmare, but not great.
The obvious supermare at the moment is Hasili, dam of Banks Hill, Dansili, Intercontinental and Cacique. She’s had 7 foals of racing age, and the only one not to win a Group/Graded race yet is the current two year old. To have two champions, and a leading sire, from so few foals is pretty remarkable.
The most foals a mare can have in her career is about 18 or 19, if everything goes really well. Usual is more like 11 or 12 – if the first foal is born when the mare is 6, she will usually have to have a couple of rest years and have the odd barren or slipped and retire at about 21 or 22. Lots of sweeping generalisations in that statement!!
I wouldn’t send Ouija Board to Montjeu – I’d be swayed towards the American sires, such as Giant’s Causeway or AP Indy.
October 16, 2007 at 17:24 #119898Galopin and St Angela appeals as a mating likely to produce a decent flat performer.
For a jumper, Archive and Bright Cherry could have possibilities.
October 16, 2007 at 23:46 #119968When i think of how unlucky Pride was (fast finishing in g1’s and 2’s) it guts me. For me, she was the best mare of recent times (ouija inc) and proved this with big wins on her last two starts (newmarket, japan). She was by Pientre Celebre and was really reaching her peak when retired. I was pleased to hear she’s been covered by Monsun who i rate hugely. This raised a few eyebrows as german lines still aren’t rated! ..eer.. Manduro?… You have to go back six generations for slight inbreeding which im told is eer…good
Cant wait to see that one but probably wont be anything till a 4yoOctober 17, 2007 at 00:05 #119971…Oh and thanks Sal. I was hoping you would help
im so lazy…October 17, 2007 at 00:26 #119973Oujia Board and Shamardal quickly spring to mind.
