1992 Sussex Stakes
July 26, 2024 at 17:19 #1702734One of the great milers. Strangely under appreciated, sadly.
July 26, 2024 at 17:21 #1702735Lester at his contemptuous best.
July 26, 2024 at 17:22 #1702736An extraordinary turn of foot.
July 26, 2024 at 18:33 #1702742Zilzal in 89 Sussex stakes. Such a classy animal.
July 26, 2024 at 19:00 #1702746The 2012 Sussex Stakes was essentially a walk over for Frankel but 2011 was deemed the “Dual on the Downs” and I remember exactly where I was, called out last minute to a job in Milton Keynes. Cursing I got there and luckily enough they had a television in the canteen which I went straight to, Canford Cliffs threatened but Frankel just accelerated away.
The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.
July 27, 2024 at 09:44 #17028192006 Nassau Stakes – Ouija Board v Alexander Goldrun
July 27, 2024 at 11:19 #1702853“The 2012 Sussex Stakes was essentially a walk over for Frankel”
The striking thing about that though were his sectionals in the last three furlongs – 10.75, 10.42 and 12.15 (33.32). Considering that he was only pushed out to win it with such ease and what Farhh did to the opposition in the Lockinge the following season just blows the mind.

That is one of my all-time favourite Flat races Nathan. Not many people expected Toronado to beat Dawn Approach but we both knew that Toronado at his best was always gonna be a major threat. Richard Hughes giving a terrific tactical ride. Utterly brilliant!July 27, 2024 at 14:10 #1702889I met TAPK a few weeks beforehand at Nottingham and told him the only way Toronado wins will be for him not get into a fight with Dawn Approach and leave it late and go wide when passing him
and that’s exactly how it panned out….Not sure why the video hasn’t posted up without the link…
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 27, 2024 at 14:36 #1702894Frankel’s 2nd Sussex Stakes win was amazing just by the way he left Farrh for dead by clocking back to back sub 11s furlongs (10.78s for the 6th furlong and 10.72 for the 7th furlong) respectively on route.
I think people forget just how good Farrh was – he was already a dual placed horse at G1 level (½L 2nd to Nathaniel in the Eclipse and an unlucky 2¾L 3rd to So You Think in the POW at Royal Ascot) before Goodwood and he subsequently went on to win 2 G1s (beating Cirrus Des Aigles on soft ground in the Champion Stakes) and be G1 placed a further two more times.
Holt’s commentary summed it up: “This is what makes him a such a great racehorse, an instant turn of foot and horse that are top class in their own right are made to look pedestrian….Frankel dismisses his rivals with contempt”
July 27, 2024 at 14:42 #1702896Nathan – the clip has been highlighted as not being able to be played back other than directly on YouTube. On You Tube if you click on the share button and then on the embeded link a message will come up to say playback been disabled.
The first clip I linked to on the above post was the same – had to find another one and edited my post so it would show.
July 27, 2024 at 14:59 #1702898Cheers pal

I was at Goodwood that day
Bumped into Richard Hannon and asked for a photo, gave the wife the camera and we all know the rest…Blackbeard to conquer the World

Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 27, 2024 at 15:37 #1702907Hughes loved the waiting and waiting and then pounce late tactics and it worked especially well at Goodwood.
Canford Cliffs nabbing Rip Van Winkle was another masterclass and of course who can forget Olympic Glory in the Vintage Stakes in 2012
July 28, 2024 at 13:21 #1703078I love the Goodwood Cup and the Big Orange/Stadivarius era and the race that sticks in the mind was the changing of the guard in 2017 when Big Orange was trying to give the 3yo Strad 13lbs I think and couldn’t but true to form he went down gallantly. I don’t know how to link youtube videos on here unfortunately but will give it a go
