Having been in York for the last 48 hrs, I don’t believe that the 11mm of rain on Monday evening and the shower on Tuesday afternoon was significant enough to cause the abandonment of the whole meeting of a course that was apparently raceable on Monday evening.
August 20, 2008 at 19:00 #177509Certainly makes for some decent racing on saturday, which means I can watch it!!!
August 20, 2008 at 19:17 #177510Slightly concerned that the Juddmonte is going to cut-up to almost nothing. Especially if the Irish horses have returned home. Does anyone know what the score is with The Duke and New Approach ?…are they boarding locally ? Bolger and O’Brien may be reluctant to fly these horses over again and risk affecting their preperartion for the Irish Champion stakes which is obviously the ultimate aim for both.
August 20, 2008 at 19:43 #177512I think a huge round of applause should be given to Ruth Quinn in relocating the major races that have been lost from the York meeting,
For a start Newbury are giving free admission to anyone with a ticket for York this week which is a fine gesture as you are now having the Gimcrack and the Ebor thrown in for good measure and i can imagine Channel 4 showing them live.
Newmarket on Friday now have the DBS Yearling Stakes,Yorkshire Oaks and the Nunthorpe to form a huge 11 race card which eclipses the 10 race Cheltenham card which was bloody good in itself.
This now means that in the past 2 years the Oaks from Yorks and Lancs have now been run on the July course.Goodwood on Saturday will have the Voltigeur which is a very good bonus and now gives a huge 8 race card and will also complement the Group 2 Celebration Mile.
Newmarket now hosts the International on Good ground which will hopefully bring New Approach and Duke of Marmalde together and with 11 races on the previous day i can imagine both sides of the Bunbury Mile being used to fresh ground can be kept for Saturday.
Indeed this is a very good recovery mission from the BHA to keep these high quality races in the calendar albeit spread over the country.
It looks like the Lonsdale and Lowther wont be run which is a shame although maybe Sandown could offer to run the Lonsdale over 2m next Saturday on Variety Club day as that could be a bonus.
So well done the BHA, just shows that when the chips are down we battle on and keep going on.

Given it was dry yesterday I was a little surprised they abandoned the whole meeting at the first midday inspection…but as it has turned out entirely the right decision as there has been yet more significant rain overnight which, I feel sure will have topped up the waterlogging.
Hope you managed to enjoy the rather jolly Dunkirk spirit that was evident in the city centre yesterday DJ.
It’s an ill wind…the pubs, cafes, eateries were all seeing good trade
August 21, 2008 at 10:26 #177552Talking about Dunkirk Drone
is a nice stretch.
This whole affair
has certainly put Yorkshire
much bolder on the racing map.
Just wait til next year
it will be teemingAugust 21, 2008 at 10:48 #177553Cheers Drone. Made the best of a bad situation on Tuesday. Was in one bar where the crowd were watching the 400m womens final and it could have been New Approach or Duke of Marmalade such was the verve that nearly everybody was shouting home Ohuruogu with.
