Todays racing fiasco comes at Haydock where the starter and horses gather at the 2m6 start for a 2m5 race.
What will be next weeks cock up ?
January 17, 2015 at 21:24 #501908Retrospective bans all round.
On one hand an embarrassing mistake, on the other another sign that on occasions racing couldn’t run a piss up in a brewery.
January 17, 2015 at 21:32 #501911It being a complete and utter shambles notwithstanding, I thought it was absolutely hilarious.
How bad would it have been had the error not been spotted until after the off?
January 17, 2015 at 23:42 #501919What about the Peter marsh chase over 3m1f ? This was started in the same place as the 3m1f betfair chase despite The later being run on the flat course so to me one of these race distances is incorrect
January 19, 2015 at 16:16 #502132Suppose it was too much to hope that, after correctly calling off a planned inspection over an hour early despite a still-negative air temperature, that the venerable Mr T would get everything right on the day…

Were the starts for the 2013 and 2014 Betfair Chases in different places? Particularly, where was the time started from, ie where was the starting line?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq3Sa8e7cIQ

Value Is EverythingJanuary 20, 2015 at 08:22 #502227January 20, 2015 at 19:07 #502286Am aware the 2013 running could not be over the same distance as 2012, given Cue Card’s time.
Thought they said this season’s Betfair was run on the same flat track as last season Alan. Am I wrong?
Value Is EverythingJanuary 20, 2015 at 21:21 #502299Ginger,
Well I have no expectation that what they said was what actually happened.
But in 2013 the Betfair chase was run entirely on the flat course, which is outside the normal chase course all round the entire circuit.
In 2014, they used the bend of the flat course on the home turn, but the remainder was run on the normal chase track.
That’s if you believe the advance information provided by Tellwrong. After the 2013 Betfair Chase fiasco, I gave up taking any notice of his pronouncements.
The racecourse chairman has reportedly been trying to replace Kirkland Tellwright for several years, but so far all the applicants have failed the interview. Turned out they were all fully qualified and had sensible names, so obviously weren’t the right sort for Haydock.
January 20, 2015 at 22:52 #502309It is a shame about Haydock Alan. Used to have a lot of bets there; not now. Only one or two races a year. Bad enough not being able to trust the ground, but now it’s distances aswell.

I just live in fear of him starting to apply any similar sort of course husbandry modifications, ripping out of perfectly acceptable fences, etc. at Carlisle, thus stymying the steady ascent of what has become one of the most improved Rules courses in the country over the past half-decade or so. Save for the adding of a separate line for Flat races (probably needed), so far he’s resisting any such urges…
