There’s plenty of excellent rap and hip-hop music out there that neither warrants nor especially gets that particular brand of treatment from wazzeks in automobiles.
You don’t hear Rapper’s Delight by the Sugarhill Gang blaring out of yer GTis very often, do you!
Another good year for quality, independently-distributed UK hip-hop, I reckon, with the likes of Akala and New Flesh finding particular favour Chez Column.

December 20, 2006 at 12:59 #103998Talking of one-hit wonders it is nice to see a pic of Jonny Whetstone in Search For A Tipster in the RP. He was lead singer of The Look – you may remember his hit of the same name in the 80s which, on vinyl, skipped to repeat the last line ad nauseaum.
Good bloke then and obviously still a shrewd punter.

<br>His hit was actually called I Am the Beat, wasn’t it?
And here they are performing it. Youtube strikes again:

I’m cringing at the awfulness of it just now, you should see my face when it’s on the radio.
December 21, 2006 at 12:37 #104001Thanks Jeremy – brought back some memories. In the 80s I used to have a good collection of singles and used to play them at friends partys. Once I embarrassed Johnny by continually playing this single when he was in attendance. He was incredibly modest.
