A survey for C4’s Location, Location, Location has revealed that Middlesbrough is the worst place to live in the UK, followed by Hull and Newham, East London.
No Scottish or Northern Irish places made the top 20.
October 15, 2007 at 11:57 #119550Steve,
I live just a few miles away from Middlesbrough, in Stockton on Tees. I will be honest with you, I hate going to Middlesbrough, it’s just so intimidating when you see the characters that walk the streets.
I’ve never lived in the place so couldn’t comment on what it’s like to live there, and this is what P’s me off with these polls. It’s a poll compiled from various statistics, and yet it’s a poll that has had no input from the people who live in the places that it condemns.
In fact, how can it be classed as a poll/survey because a poll is a study in which people are asked for their opinions, and a survey is an examination of opinions made by asking people questions. They didn’t ask anybody’s opinion and they haven’t asked anybody any questions
All they have done is compile a table of results from official statistics – this is called analysis, not a survey or poll the stupid beggers
Though I agree Middlesbrough is not pretty

October 15, 2007 at 12:03 #119553From my own perspective I can’t believe Rotherham isn’t there and Doncaster in front of Manchester as a frequent visitor to Manchester I can tell you it should be in the top three in the last 2 years ive visited Ive been pelted by yobs while sat in a car, walked past three dead rats on two streets, graffiti, broken glass you name it.
Interesting it comes from official figures and not actually peoples own opinions.
October 15, 2007 at 12:12 #119554Yes Steve, it would have been much better if Location, Location, Location actually went to Middlesbrough with their camera’s, and stopped a few people in Middlesbrough and said;
"Based on official statistics, Middlesbrough is the worst place to live in the UK – what is your opinion?"
Then the camera’s could have filmed the brutal attack on the interviewer by the residents – and at least then the programme would have visual evidence that Boro is a not very pleasant

October 15, 2007 at 13:06 #119569Sadly the scum of society are everywhere.
I live a reasonable part of a reasonable city and yet there isn’t a public area nearby where evidence of low-life isn’t readily to hand. Litter, graffiti, broken glass, last night’s spewed-up kebab, dog-sh*t etc….
We seem to have a higher proportion of bad-mannered morons than the rest of Western Europe. Why?
Single-parent families where there is no father figure?
Immigration?
Poor education?
27th rate politicians?
Pis# poor tabloid press that’s read by the masses?
Low grade TV programmes that glorify shabbiness and immorality?
The state-dependency culture?October 15, 2007 at 16:23 #119631A lot of the decline is down to Thatcher and every single politician that has come after her. None of them have sorted out the mess she left behind after shutting down all of the big state industries and all of them have failed to tackle the countries drug problem (heroine mainly).
If the folk at the top don’t care, why should anyone else?

I would pay to watch that. Episode two could be the same thing, only with the presenters from Top Gear in Afghanistan.
I think we’ve found a new telly format

October 16, 2007 at 10:08 #119797My husband works in Merthyr Tydfil and he is always glad to leave it. It is apparently the benefit claiming capital of the UK and has the dubious honour of being the place where more white socks are sold than anywhere else .
I’m a bit surprised to see Doncaster there. Having spent a little time there while my daughter was at the Northern Racing College, I thought it was a nice place. There’s a lot of modernisation going on and the people there are amongst the friendliest I’ve ever come across .
October 16, 2007 at 10:47 #119804My turn to have a little rant again now:
People rarely seem to take into account the community they’re moving into when buying somewhere, don’t you think? Now I live in what would be regarded as a salubrious, sought after part of the south east, with loads of Londoners wanting to ‘get away from it all’ moving in, and you can’t blame them.
The air is clean, gorgeous countryside….nice people? well not where I am. There is a general theme that runs through the locals here, those born and bred into the area, and I’ve noticed this over several years now, they will speak to you only when they want something, then they will swarm around like bees to a honeypot.
After they’ve got what little favour they want, they revert to type, i.e. they wouldn’t speak to you or pass the time of day [too much of an effort to say ‘hello’], even walk right past you as if you don’t exist.
This is a generalisation but it does seem to be endemic in this area. Customer service, if you can call it that, rarely exists in the local shops – you’re lucky indeed if you get a ‘thank you’ after paying, they’re usually too busy talking amongst themselves to notice you in any way.I’m not from here, but from the West Country and I still have a slight accent indicative of my origins. I was brought up to be sociable, people are welcome in my home [if not for a quick feel…lol], my door is always open, but seemingly pointless as if I dare make anything like a friendly utterance at a passer by, I’m stared at like an alien from outer space has landed….they’re weird, and at times I’ve thought it must be me, but it’s not, it’s them and anyone who moves here will tell you, after some time, that this is their experience too.
When I moved here I self financed restoration of a run down wasteland closeby, which during the mid 90’s housing depression, resulted in an approx. £5000 increase on the value of everyone’s homes. Was it appreciated? one or two acknowledged my efforts. Others, the response was something like "[moan], what you doing all this for [moan], it’s raining [moan], aren’t you going in [moan], you’ve been watching too many garden makeover programmes [moan]"…lol…I do try to see the funny side of it.
Some of the houses can be beautiful, gorgeous kitchens, sparkling bathrooms, but best check the neighbours out first, is my advice. An unwelcoming community is a dull life indeed. I hope I never become like them.
On a happier note, the weather is usually nice and Plumpton, Brighton and Goodwood are not too far away.
p.s. please do not ask me for the name of this sh*thole.

Depends on what year the figures are from I suppose unfortunately all the new things are coming at a price the stadium is in debt, the new college hub is in a financial scandal, the airport company want 5 year tax breaks from the council and most residents don’t have any respect for the town litter everywhere and unsightly vagrants.
There are trying to make it better but if the people who live in Doncaster don’t do there part what’s the point.
October 16, 2007 at 11:48 #119819Bloody hell UM,
I’d hate to see you have a big rant
