Discreet Cat is too high IMO, he still has not proved anything to me. Won the UAE derby when the two only horses to compete with him that day were ‘under the weather’ shall we say.

I presume that the two horses that you’re talking about were the Ian Jory duo, Simpatico Bribon and Gold For Sale? Invasor himself was trashed too in it too, remember.<br>

I do remember, indeed. Invasor has improved out of all recognition since that race and the way he ran that day suggested he wasn’t even fit. Richard Hills was up and he travelled very well and then all of a sudden stopped, as if he ‘blew up’.

Simpatico Bribon and Gold For Sale were both ‘got at’, we will never know how good they were but on their previous wins it very much suggested both would have given Discreet Cat a run for his money.

EW, we can argue all you want, we will never know how good GW was but everything about him said class. His turn of foot, his ability to travel powerfully and the amount he had left when the button was pressed.

I don’t know why they sent him for the classic, greed i suppose. He would have won the mile and then perhaps people might have appreciated him more.

Don’t get me wrong Stormont, GW may have had the potential to be Top Class, the same as Deep Impact may have, the same as Descreet Cat still may have, but i’m afraid, none have shown it  in any of their races so far imhaho

So therefore i do not deem any of em worthy of the tag Top Class

I am very skeptical about hype horses but George Washington was the top horse of the year for me followed by Rail Link and then the dirt horses.

The vast majority of the IFHA handicappers are white, male and Western. What preconceptions do they start with?

One of them seems to be that occidental form is necessarily superior to oriental.

Another, since they declared Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Invasor world champion, is that dirt form is necessarily superior to turf.

Let’s not waste indignation on these simple folk. All the IFHA have produced is further proof that if you want something done really badly, you just have to get a committee to do it.

Good piece by Willo imo and  Zorro, Paul Curtis etc should read it

It also ties in very well with TDK’s Kauto Stars rating thread

Seems Sleepy Hollow are not in agreement with the World Rankings

    <br>From BF  site

Timeform, the world renowned horseracing publishers, are likely to disagree markedly in some areas with the recently published World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings when their prestigious “Racehorses of 2006â€ÂÂ

"Timeform’s two-year-old handicapper, took issue with Teofilo’s official rating of 123, which makes the colt the second-lowest leader of his generation on official figures since 1994."

    Surprised by this stat.

Surprised by Teofilo being rated so lowly by the WTRR or surprised by Timeform’s two-year-old handicapper taking issue with this?!

The JRA’s own rankings for 2006 are now out:

    http://japanracing.jp/_rankings/2006/04t.html

<br>To me it’s very worrying that we now have a few "white, male, middle-aged, Western" handicappers acting loudly like they know Japanese races better than the Japanese.

That kind of Bush/Blair neo-imperialist attitude has caused wars : let’s have a bit more recognition and respect for Japanese racing professionals and the international community.

    best regards

I think the point is that a rating in itself is meaningless, but a rating in context – in this instance that Teofilo is a substandard champion two-year-old according to the WTRR – means a whole lot more.

I’d be very surprised if Timeform were to rate Teofilo so lowly in a comparative historical context. But then it is not at all apparent that the official ratings have the checks and balances in place to make historical comparisons valid, whatever they might pretend.<br>

Going back to 1998 I was comparing the following ratings

    Year                              Tf Top Rated           WTR

    2006   Teofilo                   126                    123<br>2005   Horatio Nelson      123+                  125 George W<br>2004   Shamardal             126p                  123<br>2003   Bago                      121p                  121<br>2002   Oasis Dream          122                    123 <br>2001   Johannesburg        127                    126<br>2000   Nayef                     123p                  123 Minardi<br>1999   Distant Music          121p                  125 Fasliyev<br>1998   Mujahid                   125p                  123

The ratings on the left show the Timeform Ratings of their top rated 2yo colt and the ratings on the right show the rating accorded to the WTRR ratings the names by the side of that set of ratings is the name of their top rated colt if different to timeforms.

The issue I have with the ratings EW is that according to the WTRR ratings Teofilo wasn’t a better horse than Oasis Dream, Minardi, Fasliyev and Mujahid. In my opinion, and according to timeform ratings, he is. That would be my main issue with them.
