I believe that it is indefensible to ban fans from any country which qualified to be in the World Cup. Just as bad, I am concerned that many fans will not be safe with ICE being legally able to collect and detain who they like, Accordingly, I think we should all boycott the World Cup in the USA.
What is the overall view out there?
February 2, 2026 at 18:33 #1753365I am boycotting the event completely – not even watching it on TV. I did the same for the Qatar farce in 2022 as well.
February 2, 2026 at 22:20 #1753388The honest answer is I will watch on TV mostly at home, perhaps a bit in the pub. Ultimately I’m not going to deprive myself of something I enjoy when doing so won’t make so much as a penny difference to FIFA’s or the USA’s coffers. Wouldn’t attend if it was free.
I don’t believe any country will boycott but I’d understand if they do. It would certainly be more discussed if the same was going on in certain other countries but obviously the USA gets a pass from the international community as ever.
Still four months to go though, a lot could happen in that time.
February 3, 2026 at 07:26 #1753406I wonder if books (sporting index) will do a spread how many hours spent pitch side watching VAR calls
Don’t watch many games now days go up twice a year when we play Spurs meet up with the old boys from Chelsea (bit like our jolly boys outings)
Fingers crossed for exciting games and just not keep ballFebruary 3, 2026 at 07:52 #1753407Alastair Campbell has decided not to go even though he’s a huge football fan.

Ditto, near enough, though that’s largely due to having next to no interest in the event rather than from moral concerns, compelling that they are.
Near enough, because I’ll probably submit to the masochistic experience of watching bits and pieces of England’s customary underperformance.
Am I right in saying that the last major global sporting event to be boycotted by many countries was the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow follwing the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan?
1936 Olympics Berlin, 2026 World Cup USA…
February 3, 2026 at 11:30 #1753420The 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles were boycotted by all the Eastern bloc countries (with the exception of Romania) in retaliation for the American led boycott of the Moscow Olympics. But I can’t think of anything comparable since.
I am sure this World Cup will go ahead as planned. It will somehow manage to struggle along without Alistair Campbell.
February 3, 2026 at 11:38 #1753421Whatever anyone thinks of Campbell it’s good that someone with a high internet profile ( I think TRIP is one of the most listened to podcasts, and is not only listened to by people in this country but worldwide) is making a point of boycotting it.

A mildly amusing tale resulting from the 1984 boycott.
February 3, 2026 at 17:34 #1753452Maybe if enough countries boycott it England may win I suspect Allan Wells would not have won the 100m gold had the Americans not boycotted Moscow.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 3, 2026 at 21:11 #1753466After his epic rant last weekend, the FA should make Ian Holloway the England manager. It wouldn’t be dull.
