Snowboarding and events where competitors do back flips and somersaults on skis.

A proper sport? Or is it just privileged posh kids messing about?

Funnily enough, a random thought occurred to me about ten minutes ago.

“I suppose the Winter Olympics is on the telly – thank goodness I keep it switched off.”

As much a sport as any other (horses running round a field). In fact they are highly skilled and brave competitors. I’ve been skiing and snowboarding and both are difficult. Hard enough to stay upright on a snowboard let alone do what they do. Really don’t know why you call them ‘privileged posh kids’. A lot of them are just ordinary people who have made a lot of sacrifices to get where they are.

Racing’s own John Hunt was commentating on the luge earlier. I do quite like the ‘sliding’ events.

Not a fan of the subjective stuff where you win by judges. It’s impressive but just not for me.

Love the curling, strangely compelling although once every four years is enough.

Agree with that. I do not doubt the technical ability of snowboarders, skaters etc. But in my opinion they are not sports.

I have the same thought about gymnastics in the summer Olympics. I do not mind watching it but it comes down to a judge’s opinion. A spectacle but not a sport.

I prefer the winter games to the summer version. I enjoy the skiing (Alpine and Cross Country) and the sliding events, especially bobsleigh.

Curling is OK. Bowls on ice. Surprised Rishi Persad does not commentate on it. ;-)

Why should it matter what background people come from anyway?

Isn’t a sport just a game that takes itself too seriously?

It’s the Olympic Games not the Olympic Sports, so anything goes I suppose. Where’s Tiddlywinks?

Des Lynam said all that needs saying about these myriad trivialities:

“Going down the pub isn’t an Olympic event…yet, but Beach Volleyball is”

Agree that Curling provides an engrossing half hour or so. The Olympics, for me, are an opportunity to sample ‘odd’ sports/games I wouldn’t dream of watching anywhere else. Once every four years is more than adequate

I have no problem with events that are decided by judges opinions, after all most sports are decided or influenced in some way by an officials decision or opinion to some extent. To me though one thing I’ve noticed when watching things like diving, gymnastics etc. is that when the experts in the studio give their view it is nearly always the same as the judges so they know exactly what is good or bad. Another really important point is that you very rarely hear the competitors complain about the points awarded, even when it’s very close and may have cost them a gold medal.

Would agree though that curling is a fantastic watch.

I’m really scared of heights. How anyone can do those ski jumps is beyond me.

I too usually enjoy the curling and skeleton / bob stuff.
Not watched any this time around.
Not got any enthusiasm for these Chinese Olympics when it’s used for political purposes.

    Sport?

    Game?

    Boring?

I only really have a view in the last one.

Saving (yet more) on the electricity bill by giving this event the swerve!

My brother’s gone one better than you, he’s cut the plug off his telly!

The Winter Olympics leave me cold…..
I remember when there was just the ski-jump, the slalom and the the downhill; now we have added in the giant slalom, the super-giant slalom, the combined etc…
Bit like the festival; the Ryanair, 3-mile novice hurdle, mares novice hurdle etc etc.

Have to use the mute button during the snowboard racing. The way the two commentators scream with excitement no matter what has happened is grating!

Eurosport is good if you have that Cork, I’ll tolerate most commentators but the overexcited snowboard ones are a bit much.

‘Outstanding – I like him already.’

Have we found someone who has managed to out-Ian Davies you?

Thanks, I will try Eurosport. I keep forgetting about it, buried away on my Sky guide.

I usually watch the Wimbledon final on Eurosport to avoid having to listen to Andrew Castle and Tim Henman.

I was amused by the Olympics breakfast show this morning. It spent ages watching people doing back flips on snowboards and then said “We just have time to show you what happened in the Mens Figure Skating final”. Right, I mean it is only one of the premier events in the whole games…

The American lad who won was superb, and modest in victory too.
