Great shout Richard 6/6 now for the curling pair
February 7, 2026 at 11:42 #1753767They gave us a bit of a fright with the otherwise brilliant Dodds missing a sitter but realistically the damage was done at the start by scoring three. Canada were always playing catch up.
February 9, 2026 at 09:32 #1754039I enjoyed watching the luge yesterday. Anyone who does that must have nerves of steel.
A reminder of all Britain’s winter gold medal winners:
February 9, 2026 at 13:05 #1754056I remember the 2002 curling one well.
I always thought that skeleton was even more outrageous than luge being head first but as I understand it control is slightly easier (‘slighty less difficult’ is a better way of putting it) and you can at least see where you are going. Not that you’d catch me anywhere near either of them!
I do wonder if an amateur could hide away in one of the middle seats of a four person bobsleigh while the experts steer it down safely (just for the experience), I imagine it would be quite something.
February 9, 2026 at 13:24 #1754058I have often wondered that about the bobsleigh as well.
What do the middle two men in the sled actually do once they have finished pushing it from the start and jump inside? Do they have to shift their weight about to help with the steering and balance? Or have they done their job and are in effect just along for the ride?
February 9, 2026 at 16:47 #1754071Had a brief google and it would seem the main attribute required of the middle two is strength and explosive acceleration at the start. Once tucked in I imagine they just pray to god, confess their sins and concentrate on leaning the same way as the pilot.
The Skeleton starts later this week, which is relatable to we who remember regular winter snows, as it’s essentially just sledging. I came a serious cropper once as a 10yo, careering into a hedge at the bottom of a hill. Cuts, bruises and a twisted arm. Something of a badge of honour though, proudly showing-off the damage to my school chums.
I’m enjoying my dips into the games, thanks in part to this jolly thread
February 9, 2026 at 17:31 #1754075Curling semi final on now. GB under a bit of pressure but there is plenty of time left.
February 9, 2026 at 21:36 #1754090Oh dear, that was a hiding. Hopefully they can at least take home the consolation bronze tomorrow.
Looking up the bobsleigh, interestingly it appears there’s nothing in theory stopping one or more women being in the four ‘man’ crew as there’s no dedicated four woman event.
I’m sure John Hunt referenced the luge track being ‘seven eighths’ of a mile earlier. You can take him away from racing but you can’t stop him thinking in furlongs
February 9, 2026 at 22:46 #1754104They seemed to be struggling all match and did well to hang in there for as long as they did – but that one power play end was a shocker. Let’s hope they can win the bronze.
The luge was a good watch again. It must be a real sickener for the competitors who hit the wall not long after the start. They know they have blown it in a matter of a second or two.
February 10, 2026 at 08:04 #1754154there’s no dedicated four woman event
But there is the women’s Monobob but no men’s event
Why so?
February 10, 2026 at 08:08 #1754155The difficulty and fine margins of top level sport on full display, Cork.
But there is the women’s Monobob but no men’s event
Why so?
Fewer female bobsledders was a reason cited for the lack of a four woman event, perhaps that is the trade off?
February 10, 2026 at 14:22 #1754180You have to hand it to her: the Italian girl is playing an absolute blinder against Britain in the curling.
February 10, 2026 at 15:04 #1754183Mixed curling side peaked to early? Or as CAS points out the Italian girl was brilliant
February 10, 2026 at 16:32 #1754187Unfortunately they played their worst match in the semi final. They seemed to play quite well today but sometimes you just have to accept that your opponents played better.
February 10, 2026 at 16:56 #1754191Like any sport, it’s all about how you handle the biggest moments and sadly they fell short.
The men’s team, including Mouat are favourites with the bookmakers so hopefully some success to come, one better than last year. Dodds is in the women’s team but despite being defending champions they will struggle if the odds are to be believed.
February 11, 2026 at 17:15 #1754272Just caught up with Ilia Malinin’s performance from last night.
There ought to be a law against being that talented!
February 11, 2026 at 18:51 #1754292The couple of times I’ve tried ice skating have ended nothing short of embarrassingly. I don’t know how they do it.
I had forgotten that there is doubles luge. I’m not sure who looked that that and thought ‘you know what that luge is missing? A partner!’
