Apparently, under a subsection of rule 83, the BHA has the power “to refuse to accept any declaration of rider for a horse” – wonder what lackey had the job of scourering through the rule book hoping to find something that could stop her from riding and thus save the BHA from another pr disaster.
To add insult to injury she picked up a four day ban for careless riding at Kempton tonight
May 31, 2017 at 21:18 #1302823They’re quoting safety and public perception.
Not sure about the safety concern, surely if she’s unsafe there she’s unsafe anywhere but I suppose you could argue about horse perhaps falling in a heap and causing issues plus nerves getting to her and affecting her judgement.
Public perception is valid IMO. Imagine three or four out, Cracksman or Cliffs Of Moher begins to make a significant move from the back and her horse, falling rapidly through the field, interferes with them costing them all chance.
Someone made a point about why Pendleton was allowed to ride but I guess in her case it was an amateur’s race in teh first place.
Who’d have thought this year’s big Derby story would be about a 59 rated horse trained by John Jenkins.
May 31, 2017 at 21:40 #1302827First of all can I just say that personally I think the horse should NOT have ran in the Derby.
HOWEVER and it is a big however how can the BHA be quoted as saying there is no rule saying the horse and jockey can’t run and then three days before the race come up with a never used before rule or sub rule to say the jockey cannot ride in the race.
I think from a PR point of view this is a serious “shot themselves in the foot” moment for horseracing!!
Like I have already said I didn’t want the horse to run but what I want and what is allowed are not the same thing!
Disgrace is too strong a word to use in this instance but as far as good publicity is concerned I think they (The BHA) have dropped a big clanger!!
May 31, 2017 at 21:55 #1302828Maybe I am alone in my thoughts but I think the owner has hijacked an age-old Classic horse race and has tried to buy some cheap advertising.
Cheap horse, cheap entry fee and cheap intentions.
Almost any pish can be tarted up as worthy if you add the tag “It’s all for Charridy”
The horse has no place in the race.
To add insult to injury bookies get their low moral values into the equation, by saying that they are taking more money on the Charridy horse than they are on Cracksman.
Just like the crap about Crystal Ocean going off favourite for the Derby, as claimed by some Ladbrokes rep on some bummed up think tank, it’s ludicrous crap.
I reckon the owner is a tit. That’s my opinion, sorry if others feel differently. As a method for raising funds, I feel it has little merit. There must be a better way of winning actual price money to help a cause.
I know for a fact that other charities are far more in need of advertising than the one in question here.
I also know for a fact that the charity involved here will never get a penny piece from me. I have local charities that need it more and they are not trying to run a Robin Reliant in a Formula 1 race to try to grab a bit of cheap advertising.
In the age of Twitter, it’s not so much Tweet, Tweet, Tweet, but rather Cheep, Cheep, Cheep.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 31, 2017 at 22:50 #1302830Mangan ain’t riding but quite a few of the twitterati are on high horses saying the BHA have got it wrong.
People are free to post what they want, but maybe they should just stop a minute and ask themselves, “If she rode in the race and caused a serious accident, would I voice no criticism of the BHA afterwards for allowing her to ride?”
I suspect that if that was answered honestly, twitter would be a much quieter place tonight.

Take my word for it Steve – the no-hoper is/was our biggest loser in the Derby book. 100%, scout’s honour, cross my heart etc.

Sadly too many on social media are a react/tweet first think much later if at all – whatever way the BHA went they were going to look bad, a case of somebody finding a loop hole and taking advantage of a situation (where common sense would tell you not to) all to get their five minutes of fame, which could quite probably now result in the BHA having to make amendments to their rules to ensure nothing like this happens again.

Good. If our sport was treated more as a successful industry with a public face in which participants (equine and human) literally risk their lives, instead of constantly pandering to the “National Velvet” mentality which pervades certain sections, this wouldn’t have been allowed to happen in the first place.
“It’s all for charity” is now used to excuse all sorts of inappropriate behaviour and idiocy.
June 1, 2017 at 11:15 #1302859The circus goes on.. Paddy Pilley to take the ride in place of Mangan.
June 1, 2017 at 12:12 #1302862I don’t understand the ‘charity’ side of this. Owner Richard Aylward has promised ‘all winnings’ (i.e. nothing) to Great Ormond St Hospital and set up a Just Giving page for donations. That currently stands at £301 from 9 donors. By any measure, this has palpably failed to capture the public’s attention.
Is it not the case that Mr Aylward simply wants a ‘big day out’ with his horse at The Derby and enjoy all the attendant kudos? He’s paid all the entry fees (any idea how much?) so that’s absolutely fine, although I’d rather he just said that, rather than trying to dress it up as some grand work for a worthy, albeit already very high profile, charity.

June 1, 2017 at 12:44 #1302863Don’t like the owner’s comments about how the BHA are elitest because they let Pendleton ride in the Foxhunters but are not letting Mangan ride – two completely different scenarios that are not relevant, but then he is only about getting as much publicity for himself as possible.
June 1, 2017 at 13:18 #1302865I think it’s a real shame, racing is so sanitised these days, we need these stories to keep the interest up and get racing off the back pages. Let’s have a fairy tale every now and then. OK the horse is almost certain not going to be competitive but the connections are paying their fees to be there and if they beat just one home are vindicated for taking part. Just my humble opinion.
June 1, 2017 at 14:26 #1302872Owner is now going to complain to the Queen.
I think he’s had quite enough attention for what he’s spent.
June 1, 2017 at 14:41 #1302873maybe i’m missing something, but i thought the issue here was whether Epsom /the BHA are OK with what is in effect ambush marketing of their premier event.
the answer seems to be that they are.
how much is Mr Aylward paying compared to Investec ?
has Great Ormond Street Hospital authorised him to associate their name with this exercise ?
June 1, 2017 at 16:15 #1302883I am offering 10,000/1 on Diore Lia, after hearing rumours of another late twist in this sorry tale.
The rumour is that the owner is riding her himself:-

A few pounds overweight there I feel

I agree, I really cannot see the horse causing any problems and I remember the same old arguments 21 years ago when Alex Greaves rode Portuguese Lil into last place.
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJune 1, 2017 at 22:05 #1302921It’s very long odds-on that horse and rider would have caused no problems, but that slim risk of a bad accident is not one racing can afford to take.
Derby Day might be well past its height of public affection but it’s easily big enough to hang a massive PR disaster on.
