William Hill punter becomes millionaire
by Racing Post staff
A WILLIAM HILL punter is believed to have become the first betting-shop fixed-odds millionaire on Friday night after his eight-horse accumulator landed odds of more than £2,000,000-1.
His 50p stake won him a cool £1 million – which is Hills’ limit on horseracing.
Hills say the customer is a regular in a branch in Thirsk, North Yorkshire and places these type of bets almost daily – although he has never previously come close to winning on a major scale.
"Even a scriptwriter couldn’t have dreamt this one up," said the firm’s spokesman David Hood.
"His first winner was called Isn’t That Lucky in the 2.55pm at Sandown on Friday afternoon and his last winner was A Dream Come True in the 9.20pm at Wolverhampton."It is a staggering bet and earns him a place in history asthe world’s first betting-shop millionaire."
The customer’s winning selections:
Isn’t That Lucky – 2.55pm Sandown (8-1)
Mutamarres – 3.05pm Nad Al Sheba (7-2)
Mutasallil – 3.40pm Nad Al Sheba (11-2)
Racer Forever – 4.15pm Nad Al Sheba (4-1)
Ede’s 4.50pm – Warwick (10-1)
Rio L’Oren – 7.50pm Wolverhampton (15-2)
Guadaloup – 8.20pm Wolverhampton (11-2)
A Dream Come True – 9.20pm Wolverhampton (5-2)Fair play to the bloke those are some stonking selelctions, especially in an eight horse accumulator.
February 23, 2008 at 14:08 #145852just announced on atr he didnt even know, he placed some more 8-way accas this morning in a different hills shop and handed over yesterdays tickets and asked if there was anything to come
hills are saying technically they could have limited the payout to 100k as there were foreign races involved but decided to be generous !
February 23, 2008 at 14:11 #145854What a mug. At least 2 of the horses he backed were no value.
February 23, 2008 at 14:16 #145856LOL @ DJ
February 23, 2008 at 14:41 #145864they mustve been value, he took the early prices
February 23, 2008 at 14:41 #145865limits yuk!!!!! give him his other million you miserable bastids……..his last winner was "dream come true"………….wonder if he thought about that when put his bet on
…………love it when a mig punter hits it big……..good on him……………hope he walks into tomorrow and puts 50p on and walks back out again. There should be a rule that if a bet gets to the stage when you will break their limit that only the amount taken to reach the limit should go on and the punter gets the rest paid out to him whether the final horse wins or loses.
someone do the sums………that must have been a lot of money going on that really belongs to the punter that he got nothing for.
February 23, 2008 at 15:03 #145871A well desreved million. The gentleman executing the strategy that bookies absolutely hate: pick the Sir Richard Hills bankers and build an acca around them.
Never fails.
February 23, 2008 at 15:04 #145873He was at his regal best yesteday wasn’t he Glenn.
February 23, 2008 at 15:10 #145874fist

…at people on here calling him a mug! Anyone on here ever make a million? Yes, I know what you mean is that this sort of bet is for "mugs", but that’s often a defintion given by people who may have more winning bets but never a life changing one.
I doubt if anyone on here, me included, has the right to call this fellow a mug.
Perhaps calling this big winner a mug is some sort of misplaced sense of superiority or arrogance that comes about because of jealousy that a small punter wins more than us "bigger" punters..February 23, 2008 at 15:29 #145879I see that now Barney Bullwark accidentally put a pound sign in front of the accum odds…..thought he had a 2m accum up
February 23, 2008 at 15:43 #145882I get just shy of 2.8 million to 1 for that accum.
It’s only 400k…
February 23, 2008 at 16:09 #145887bloke from hills said at the prices he took his 50p win acca came to 1.3m but they limited it to 1m
February 23, 2008 at 16:10 #145888Me too – it’s 2,799,826/1 acca so for 50p he’s down just shy of £400K
February 23, 2008 at 16:16 #145890At least he can afford
a cracking psychiatrist
for the million he lost
February 23, 2008 at 17:52 #145912I had to laugh when it was reported that the next day, whilst placing similar type bets in his bookies, he asked whoever was on the till to check and see if there was any return on "this" (his 1 million quid winning line).
