I have a feeling the normally excellent Jock , just is not cutting it at the top level , wonder if he will retain the top job for much longer
any views ??
imo
Ricky
February 9, 2014 at 15:39 #467621Sadly, I wouldn’t have thought so. Especially after the Big Buck’s saga.
If he’s replaced though, who will it be? Nick Sholfield? I can’t see STD leaving his father.
February 9, 2014 at 16:28 #467629If I were Paul Nicholls, I’d sign up Noel Fehily without hesitation whatsoever. Should have had him in the first place, imho.
February 9, 2014 at 18:20 #467644I feel sorry for Jacob as I rate him as an excellent jockey.
However I too think that he is likely to be replaced.
Personally I think that Fehily is as good as anyone riding at the moment, and if anyone gets the job I hope that it is him.
If Twiston Davies is the new appointment, then I would have serious doubts about whether he is ready for it. It will all end in tears, in my view.February 9, 2014 at 18:40 #467649Why do you feel he is ‘not cutting it at the top level’, Ricky?
He seems to be riding brilliantly with a great amount of confidence. Sure, Cedre Bleu has made a fool out of him a few times, but very few riders could have carried that mule home.
There just isn’t great strength in depth in the stable at the moment. I agree that he will be replaced even so. Whenever things go wrong at Ditcheat, the jockey is the first to go.
February 9, 2014 at 20:27 #467659Just a feeling watching him , particularly yesterday at newbury , I dont bet on Jumps , I love watching it …but felt he was weak and tactically naive …I asked myself , if he was in Ireland , would he have a top job , answer was resounding no
I like him , he’s good , but not tip top for me , Nichols has to have tip top , thats why I ask the question
imo of course
February 10, 2014 at 19:31 #467740Ricky, I agree with you, he is not strong in a finish and tactically not one of the best.
However how many really top jockeys are there.
I watched the Irish racing yesterdau and Ruby Walsh rode two superb races on Vautour and Ballycasey, each time in my opinion out riding Mullins and Cooper. However I don’t really rate either of them, especially Danny Mullins who I think is poor.
So my point is although Jacob is not that good, there are not many really good jockeys about, hence he as the job at NichollsFebruary 10, 2014 at 23:21 #467754I think Nick Schofield will get the job personally, seriously talented young man.

First of all, Noel is very happy where he is, thank you.
Secondly, would Nicholls want to appoint someone, no matter how good he is, who is approaching the end of his career? I would imagine he would want something like a 10-year association with his first jockey.
If and when DJ is replaced, my money would be on Nick Scholfield who is held in high regard not just by PN, but by his landlord Paul Barber and his major owners. They will certainly have a say in the matter.
February 16, 2014 at 21:52 #468282More interesting to see what PF does with a certain Harry Derham, who managed to get beaten on all rides at Kempton today. One more flap from those arms and he’ll take off!
February 19, 2014 at 09:02 #468458I like Scholfield, however his stats don’t have the makings of a future elite jock at a 10.9% win ratio. Seems a really decent young bloke though – ‘The Smiler’ as oft referred to.
I would think that young Twister is nailed on for the job and his father will let him go with full blessing.
February 19, 2014 at 09:05 #468459Yes Shack I agree , young Twiston is nailed on , a seriously good jock in the making
lets see what develops
imo
February 19, 2014 at 15:47 #468499Unfortunately for me, there was little wrong with DJ’s judgement or finishing style when I had my max on Sunnyhillboy in the National

Might be strange criticising any part of a Grand National winning ride Joe; but was it such a well judged race? Neptune Collonges could turn it in if not getting a good early posi, like he did once in the Hennessey. Jacob did not get away well at Aintree and it was probably the different obsticles that kept NC interested. Ok we don’t know if it was the horse or jockey’s fault and Jacob did well to gradually make up ground thereafter. However, considering the two he was up against (Seabass and Sunnyhillboy) Neptune had proven stamina. imo Jacob should have gone for everything sooner than half way up the running, only doing so after McLernen had gone a length and a half clear. As it was, if we are absolutely honest Neptune Collonges only won because Sunnyhillboy faultered close home. Should it be that criticism or praise of jockeys can be all about a centimetre? I would certainly have had something to say had the verdict gone the other way.
In my opinion – considering Neptune Collonges had a lot more to give at the finish than Sunnyhillboy – The winning margin would have been a lot greater had Jacob got after his horse earlier.
Having said that, with Jacob doing what he did, arguably had McLernen waited longer on a doubtful stayer – he’d have prevailed. Some might say am speaking in hindsight, but top jockeys take in to account their (and rival) mount’s strengths and weaknesses. On a real stayer like Neptune Collonges, if waiting until Jacob did before maximum effort is applied – then his mount is likely to have something left at the finish.

Jacob is a reasonable jockey, but Nicholls should look for better than reasonable. Am still glad he rode a better race than McLernen.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 20, 2014 at 08:31 #468543The 2012 Grand National wasn’t decided by the tactics adopted by the two jockeys involved, but by the fact that Sunnyhillboy suffered a life threatening leg injury that required emergency treatment at the racecourse immediately after the race.
Richie McLernon (spelt with an O) sensed the horse was injured and tried to nurse him home – that’s why his stride was shortening close home, not a lack of stamina.
February 20, 2014 at 12:10 #468550Thanks for that, Alan. I’d wondered at the time why Richie hadn’t given him another couple of smacks. I’d rather have a losing bet than see a broken down horse landing it…in any race
February 20, 2014 at 13:08 #468557Joe,
Here’s the report from the Post about a week after the race:
THE misery heaped upon Jonjo O’Neill and JP McManus following last Saturday’s John Smith’s Grand National was revealed yesterday to be greater than most had realised after the trainer disclosed Aintree runner-up Sunnyhillboy came close to losing his life.
O’Neill, whose McManus-owned Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised was put down after fracturing a leg while running loose after his Becher’s Brook exit, came within a nose of winning a second Grand National when Sunnyhillboy was caught on the line by Neptune Collonges.
O’Neill spoke for the first time yesterday about the serious leg injury sustained by Sunnyhillboy, who has still to return home.
The trainer said: "He struck into his offfore tendon sheath on the back of his joint and it had to be flushed out at the vets on Saturday evening. However, we have been told by the vets that they are very happy with his progress.
"He is still in the vets in Liverpool. It was touch and go with him for a while but the operation on his tendon went well and the hope is that he will race again.
"We have no idea where or when during the race it happened but hopefully he will be returning to Jackdaws Castle on Monday."
