Clive and Ian, I agree with your comments about pundits’ “could this be a Cheltenham horse’ but Have to remind you of the Booby Prize to the first person who says “this could be an Ascot two-year-old”.

    Just my attempt at ‘levelling-up’.

That’s true, Colin, another tired old media cliche/angle, but surely you agree the annual obsessing about whether seemingly every winner of a Jumps race – even if it’s just won a contest which is a good race in its own right – is a Cheltenham horse is far, FAR, worse!

I know Nicanor beat The Tank anyway, but when Denman and Black Jack Ketchum ducked each other in the Novice Hurdles it confirmed to me the fourth day would ruin Cheltenham. And it has.

I think out of all of it, the most sickening thing is naming the bloody ‘Mares Hurdle’ after the ultimate shoot-for-the-stars-and-reach-them Mare in history, Dawn Run.

Fridays card has been whittled down from 103 entries, to 57 declarations. Across the seven races, they are split 7,8,7,5,7,12,11.

Oh well, that is four races with no each way angle. And odds on for a non-runner in the second!

Good shout, Clive. Not sure that Cheltenham should name the LGBTQ+ race after him, though, lest they be forced into some hasty York-style backtracking.

It’s a decent card for a January Friday – looking forward to it.

The first race looks a belter and the second is seriously competitive.

A couple of disappointing field sizes but it is heavy ground which is always the fear with Lingfield in January.

    I’m looking forward to it.

This is probably unfair, but I attribute a lot of the focus on “Cheltenham or nothing” to have been influenced by how Best Mate was campaigned.
