Of my time:
1. Kinane ( or ‘the Great Man’ as he is known in our house!)
2. Eddery
3. Cauthen
4. Dettori
5. Fallon
July 10, 2006 at 09:01 #73504It’s a pity we didn’t see more of Willie Shoemaker because he was very very good indeed. If you conducted this poll in the USA, he would win it without any shadow of doubt. He rode here for only a few seasons on a very limited number of rides when he was arguably a shade past his best, yet still excelled on a variety of courses with his judgement of pace and his balance. He was a lightweight, but he was very strong in a finish – a throwback to some celebrated jockeys of the distant past.
July 11, 2006 at 20:29 #73505I was lucky enough to see the match race at Ascot between Piggott and Shoemaker.
Princes Gate v Spanish Reel if I remember rightly. Shoemaker won it. A very great jockey.
July 12, 2006 at 07:08 #73506How can you leave out Kinane?
July 12, 2006 at 12:30 #73507I wouldn’t. Kinane is among the top half dozen riding today even though he is not quite the force of old. At his very best, he would be in my top ten over the last twenty years.
July 17, 2006 at 06:35 #73508What was the Composer of this poll at,leaving out Mick Kinane……. The Best….
July 17, 2006 at 06:46 #73509……………and no room for Richard Hills??:o
Colin
July 17, 2006 at 07:18 #73510No need for sarcasm Seabird – according to http://www.zyworld.com/rhillsisgod/Home.htm Richard Hills is so strong in a driving finish that he’s a punters favourite. That’s not what I heard on here!
July 17, 2006 at 14:02 #73511Others for the mixer – Jerry Bailey, John Velazquez etc and from a bit further back how anyone could leave off Bill Shoemaker beggers belief.
If we were having this conversation 10 years from now i’m pretty sure that Leparoux and Gomez could be added to the list and maybe even Baze.
July 17, 2006 at 14:57 #73512I’m pleased to see George Duffield getting a vote.
I could have put in many names, ie. Joe Mercer, Eddie Hide, Mick Kinane, Frankie Dettori, Jerry Bailey, Yves St Martin, Gianfranco Dettori (i’m kinda surprised he doesn’t get a mention), WR Swinburn, Greville Starkey, Cash Asmussen, Freddie Head, Bruce Raymond, Ray Cochrane etc, etc. There are simply too many to list.
But they are all remembered for being very good at their job.
July 18, 2006 at 08:52 #73513I wanted to vote for John Wayne, why wasn’t he on the list?
July 18, 2006 at 08:55 #73514But some cowboys there maybe :o
July 18, 2006 at 18:52 #73515Duffield would not be in my top 50 . Far too whip happy . His prominence in the years when his retirement was approaching was an indictment of today’s jockeys . In the 70s and 80s it was laughable to think of putting him on a classic contender .
Piggott the best by a long way , with Cauthen a respectable second .
July 18, 2006 at 20:13 #73516Doris Day could outride Lisa Jones too.
Gianfranco Dettori – don’t make me laugh – his son is 10 times better .

July 18, 2006 at 23:38 #73517I think that Dettori (F) is only as good as the horses Godolphin give him to ride, and as the media say he is.
He wouldn’t be in my top 5 for sure. It would be –
S Cauthen
L Piggott
W Shoemaker
K Fallon
P Eddery
J Bailey (yeah, I agree he has to be in there)
W Carson
… then, maybe, Dettori.
I think he is over-rated. He lives on his public persona and that Italian style factor. He is as close to an F1 driver as you will see in horse racing. All glitz and glam. That’s my opinion anyway.
July 18, 2006 at 23:45 #73518Piggott and Cauthen are the best. End of.
Dean McKeown is a close 3rd….
July 18, 2006 at 23:54 #73519I think the sum total of 0 votes for J Spencer is very revealing; he seems to have a knack of getting his mount boxed in.
