THE Williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on December 26 has attracted less than the minimum ten entries and will be re-opened until 12noon on Tuesday.

Despite indications from connections that the likes of Binocular, Starluck and Go Native would be lining up in the 2m Grade 1, it did not receive sufficient support and trainers will get an extra 24hrs to put forward possible contenders.

If there are still less than ten entries after that extended entry deadline it will not be re-opened again and the field, however big, will stand with declarations to be made by 10am on December 23.

    More to follow . . .

Come on peter, save us Boxing Day racegoers!

Quite why the race needs to be re-opened when it will be run regardless of the number of participants I don’t know, but what use is Peter Grayson going to be?

Just two more runners needed out of the first two and Grayson will have achieved quite a feat for 2009: a 0% strike rate (rounded to the nearest whole number) for winners and less than 1% strike rate in the first two.

This is a genuine question, one I’ve always wanted to ask.

Why do people dislike Peter Grayson so much? He gets some terrible stick.

There are at two stables who won races at the sandpit today who deserve this level of disdain, but Grayson? I can’t see it.

I think it’s because he’s gone a whole year without a winner. There aren’t that many trainers with such a large string that can manage such a feat.

Did he not have a winner with Regal Royale a few months back?
Mind you it’s the only horse he has had win in the last 18 months or so.

And that was on turf, rather ironically!

Even though he has a rich owner supporting the yard, which is obviously out of form, what I cannot fathom out is the placing of horses.

A large majority of his string must be OR 45 or lower, but they are constantly placed in h/caps. If I was desperate to get a win, surely bang an OR rated mid 60’s into a seller/ banded race.

I’ve no stats, but I do think he has a high rate of pre race withdrawals.

Having watched the stable closely, I also think his recent runners with a "remote" chance of placing have been given poor rides.

A look at the 2yo’s purchased this year would indicate the strike rate can only get worse if that’s possible.

I know very little mabout training horses, but even claiming a horse and running it swiftly would be a priority ( i.e. Ebraam), simply to stop the rot.

Has any one heard any recent interviews with PG. I remember him being media friendly in the old days.

    cheers

I remember Peter Grayson having 9 of the 12 entries at Lingfield few years back, he isnt scared of chucking 5 or 6 in a race and if we’re short might aswell give him a ring see what he can do.

I fear the lack of a jumps license might prove to be something of a stumbling block, MRW.

My issues with him is that the performances of his horses, who often hang and look awkward as well as showing little ability raise equine welfare questions. Does the guy have a clue what he’s doing? His results would suggest not.

The fact that he did ok in 2005/2006 and his showjumping background, would indicate he does know how to train. It may be possible that he had an assistant who has left ( what happedned to R.P Elliot ?)that was the dominant player in the operation, but it’s the placing of horses that baffles me.

It appears his owner has stayed loyal, but what a load of dross they have aquired.

I’m glad Beamer mentioned Peter Grayson’s showjumping background, as I would have done otherwise. Success in that field alone would indicate some skills where working with horses is concerned, but my overriding thought is whether those skills are necessarily as transferable as Grayson had hoped or assumed they would be.

He did have that good 2006 with 30 winners in it, as mentioned, plus 27 the year after, but only those closer to the stable than us are going to know if he has the same resources (human or otherwise) at his disposal now as then.

Credit where it’s due in one regard, as he’s not shirking from the actuality of his awful stats this year. The link from his website to the Racing Post’s trainer stats remains active and there for all to see. The news section hasn’t been updated since late 2007, though.

He has actually tried the claim and quick return suggested earlier, but with zero success.

He claimed the 74 rated Woodcote from Patrick Chamings after it finished second in a seller in February. He’s run it ten times since and it’s beaten a grand total of seven opponents in those races, finishing last seven times in succession.

It’s handicap rating has dropped from 74 to 45 in the process.

I have taken to bait twice with his horses. the costly one was when I had Rightcar (40/1) in an E/W double with Sparking (50/1). Sparking got 3rd, but Rightcar managed to avoid getting placed in spectacular fashion. Slowly away then brought down the slowest part of the track. Even with the majority of bad horses, you can predict a running style to some degree, but not the PG horses.

The multiple entry issue is another headscratcher; claiming there are no races for the 2 yo’s. Poor old M. Johnson.

I’m also interested to know why he sends so many to Lingfield. If your going to trail in last, surely it’s more economical to do it at Wolver/South.

I wish him all the best for next season.
