Try one of the big racing synicates, they have horses whose for has gone south or are just slow.
Try Darley stud, i bet they will have more than a few rideable but slow horses in need of a good home.
I believe Sheikh M has in fact bought a stud specifically for the retraining of retired ex racers that aren’t suitable for the breeding programme, so you might want to scout about and in look in to that. Apologies for forgetting the finer details!

It is the Darley Rehoming Centre, Zoz.
Based in Newmarket, with the yard somewhere in Glos i believe.
I spoke to the female at Darley a few months ago, she is very helpful, but it seemed that there wasnt many suitable horses at the time.
Might be worth a phone call to her though.
December 22, 2008 at 17:29 #198645Try calling round a few of the smaller trainers and introducing yourself. Most will be glad to look out for something for you and may even have something due to go to the sales. Saves them the bother if they can sell it privately.
You might could pick up a horse that is perfectly sound but pretty useless as a racehorse.
Kind of how my sister picked up her new one – he needed a bit of box rest, and is a total wuss (needs a warehouse-full of rugs to go out overnight), but he was basically free to a good home.
December 23, 2008 at 01:00 #198712thankyou everyone for your suggestions, i will let you know if i manage to find one. cheers

December 23, 2008 at 06:45 #198763My ex racehorse has sadly got to be put down, but i am keen to get another. i would appreciate any information on where i could find one. I want one that is capable of having a second career as a riden horse. If anyone has any info that would be great. thanks
Hi dave. I am very sorry to hear about the demise of your horse.I know what a ghastly feeling it is.There are so many places begging for some one like you. There are two that I know of. bbobbell mentioned Greatwood, which is one of the places. There’s also Heros. The great Monsignor acts as an ambassador for them and his owner Malcolm Denmark, is their patron.

I know Stan and Elaine Mellor are patrons of one as well but I couldn’t for the life of me think of it. So I went to google to find out. That address is
http://www.racehorserehoming.co.uk/
As I was at google I typed in "rehoming retired racehorses" this gives you a massive 1,910 web sites that are looking for people just like yourself. Good luck in your quest I’m certain you’ll find exactly what your looking for.
December 23, 2008 at 11:21 #198768Hi Dave,
What sort of horse are you after, I have a couple available.December 23, 2008 at 23:32 #198863Hi cheekster, im looking for an ex racehorse that will be able to hunt, xc, hack etc. Im not bothered about colour or sex, as long as its sound, a ‘nice’ animal and is 16 hands plus.
December 24, 2008 at 01:22 #198872I nearly cried watching the greatwood Dvd. Handling damaged and flightly humans can be tricky, its comes down too flight or fight. Allot of children lack confidence, some due too learning disorders like Dyslexia ( I have it myself) , Austisum ( abbacop is the man on here too tell you about the challenges of raising an austic child)or maltreatment ( such as mental or physical abuse or even rape), which can leave allot of mental scares some of which can be healed others that can be at least treated.
Rerun ( a US charity that rescues ex racers from slaughter), has stables in state prison and the horses help take the bark off the biggest and nastiest criminals as well help people give potental stable staff the expereince needed too go and work with horses, more importantly help heal people.

They would both suit, apart from that the one isn’t 100% yet, and the other is 15hh
.
I do know of a horse that would fit the bill, not a mark on him and ridden by the trainers 12 yo daughter. He’s been roughed off since his last run a few weeks ago, but I dare say you can try him. I think the trainer wants about £1k for him. Let me know if you want the phone number.January 14, 2009 at 03:11 #203820Today i picked up my new ex racer. A 16-3 bay gelding, 12 years old, from a local trainer. hopefully he will have a fun and spoilt retirement. Thankyou everyone for your advice

January 15, 2009 at 18:37 #204088Great news, David. For the insatiably curious among us, would you like to say which ex-racer it is?
