There was a pundit on tv the other day who said he had backed a horse but kept referring to her as a he. Apparently he is an infrequent backer so I would I thought he would have known the sex of the horse when having a bet.
Don’t know whether there is any logic to it but I cannot imagine backing a horse and being totally unaware of its sex. I think I may be a bit more wary of fillies particularly when racing against colts/geldings but would certainly would want to know the sex of the horse whatever prior to a bet especially a big bet.
Do others factor the sex of the horse in when having a bet or has it no relevance at all when having a bet and do you just treat every horse exactly the same?
June 27, 2015 at 08:06 #1116587I am wary of backing fillies as well and also need to know if the male horse I am considering is a colt or a gelding.
Every factor matters.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 27, 2015 at 08:56 #1116644It’s not a big issue for me. Fillies and mares are generally a bit less consistent and a slightly higher percentage are flighty; but every horse is an individual and temperament is a vital part of form study. So I’ve already studied temperament of every horse in the race. Therefore – usually don’t need to specifically consider/know the sex of horses and often don’t know it when betting. Don’t really want to give a negative just because it’s female, because you can get very genuine, strong fillies and mares. Only time I do make a point of knowing is if there’s not much form to go on (eg in a maiden). It wouldn’t stop me betting though, just decreasing stakes a little.
Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2015 at 17:00 #1117020I’m wary of fillies and mares that are short prices in open races when their form is based on runs in fillies only races
Particularly novice hurdles and flat maidens
I suppose it’s not quite as important in handicaps but even then I don’t like fillies that have only run in fillies handicaps when they go up against males
June 27, 2015 at 23:07 #1117234is it not still the case in greyhound racing that a girl dog cannot race for 3 months after coming into season – on the basis the boy dogs will want to get on her rather than get past her.
does that not translate to horse racing ?
June 28, 2015 at 14:00 #1117609It would be remiss ( indeed, stupid ) of any punter not to check
the horse’s sex before placing a bet – apart from the obvious races
where its fillies and mares only. I always check. The fillies
allowance can make a difference in big races , such as the Arc.Old pro punter , Alex Bird , said that punters should tread carefully
before backing fillies , as they were prone to very inconsistent
performances. That is not to say he didn’t back them. He followed John Dunlop’s
great filly , Habibti ( sprinter ) religiously , betting her to
win for huge amounts. However, he failed to follow his own advice
when Habibti lost – after declaring that he had placed £1O,OOO
on her to win a televised race.Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
