Finding a buyer is one thing – getting a BHA licence to race is something else.
Unless there have been some significant changes in the last couple of weeks then I would offer long odds-on a licence not being issued by the BHA.
May 10, 2009 at 21:37 #226715Interesting comments about the GL surface. The odd trainer I’ve talked to about it all came up with a comment equivalent to "they’re still learning how to look after it". The one time I went there I walked part of the track and as it was a bit breezy I picked up handfuls and chucked it in the air and it flew about like feathers.
This was a track with very severe kickback, though the surface is not as "gritty" as some of the other A/W BAGs tracks.richard

We don’t need any more AW tracks.
When they came in the standard of racing plummeted
May 13, 2009 at 12:00 #227288Can see where you’re coming from, Tom. You prefer those freezing January days when all we had to bet on was recordings of old races from Timbuktoo and the like. Those were the days, eh? Many’s the foolhardy six pence each way I squandered then.
KMay 13, 2009 at 20:19 #227395Ken you seem to have to have a bet – when I was betting I only did so when I felt that I had a good chance of getting a return.
No racing is better than sub standard aw-racing.

You too could be like me, Tom, but it sounds to me as if you’ve retired from betting or just do it part-time. If you’re content with your lot then that’s all that matters, Tom. You take care of yourself.
Ken(aka – The Bookies’ Nightmare)May 14, 2009 at 01:09 #227450Ken I started off betting in sixpences as well.
In my thirty-years betting I studied the form-book intensely and never had a bet unless I felt there was a good chance of getting a return.
I stopped betting in 1990 for several reasons.
1… I was becoming successful with other interests in my life so as I did not have time to study the form book as much as I would have liked.. I was not going to throw my money away. When I stopped I was well in front and still have not touched some of that money even yet. The decision to switched interests was the right one because I have become very successful in other areas.
2… I was becoming concerned about how above board racing was.
3… I was becoming increasing concerned about the welfare of the racehorse.
May 14, 2009 at 01:27 #227455Tom, I hope you spotted the little fibs in my post. I truly admire both your ability to stop betting in 1990 and your reasons for doing so. Good on you.
As for me, I did kick it into touch for many years but then I felt uncomfortable having amassed so much wealth that I decided to donate a large proportion of my income to The Retired Bookmakers’ Benevolent Fund. At least I feel happier knowing that my money is going to a good cause and helps those poor destitute guys have a nice holiday and new slippers at Christmas.

November 30, 2011 at 22:44 #20388News filtering through on Twitter of a resurrection. Not many details…would be nice, lovely big galloping track.
December 1, 2011 at 17:54 #380530It would be great to see Great Leighs back racing again.
From the Racing Post today, it seems that there may be a better than even chance.
It even sounds like the plan is to build proper facilities, rather than the temporary, badly positioned grandstand that shamed the course when it was open.
The racing surface seems to have been the thumbs-up by trainers and jockeys at a not-so-secret site visit.
I would love to see the course reopen, especially as I am still kicking myself for not getting there for a meeting before it suddenly closed. I had been hoping they would get the grandstand and the viewing sorted out before I made the journey south.
A friend, who lives nearby, took me to see the course and it seemed in a good position and an otherwise good venue but, sadly, it was not to be for an actual visit to a meeting.
At least I haven’t made the same mistake with Ffos Las.
It’s certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Great Leigh over possible reopening. Will the phoenix rise from the ashes in a year or two or not? The odds seem to be shortening for a comeback. - AuthorPosts
