Bula’s name came up on twitter and I was just mentioning to a younger fella how late P Kelleway used to leave his challenge. Someone then posted a video from 1970 to prove the point which led me to finding that same race, with another tacked on. PK rode Bula, and I think he might also have been aboard Into View though my memory is too worn to be confident. Maybe Alan P can remember?

You just need need to use the full address.
You missed out at the beginning – https://
I have altered it for you.
November 23, 2015 at 11:58 #1222903Thanks, Matron. I thought I’d read somewhere that the http suff had to be left out…need to return to school!
November 23, 2015 at 12:48 #1222908Joe,
A quick bit of research on the newspaper archive shows that the Into View race was on the Friday card of the two day Sandown meeting – date was Dec 12th, 1969. But there’s no full race card, so I can’t be certain about the jockey, although it looks like Kelleway to me. I have the same pair of finishes on a VHS tape somewhere, as John Oaksey did a similar feature one afternoon in the mid 80s that showed a whole series of famous Sandown finishes, so I’ll dig that out after racing today and see if he identifies the jockey.
I confess there’s no chance I saw that race live, as I got married on Nov 1st, 1969, and had discovered a new hobby!
November 23, 2015 at 12:53 #1222909…and doubtless a much more expensive one!
Thanks, Alan
November 23, 2015 at 16:55 #1222940It was indeed Paul Kelleway.
Race card data:
Sandown – Friday 12 December 1969
3:25 Ewell Steeplechase, £803 6s to the winner, 2 miles
Naughty Boy / Col. J. Thomson / R. Armytage / 8 11-11 / D. Nicholson
Balty Boys / Mr. J. Hanson / N. Bradley / 7 11–8 / P. McCarron
Old Pueblo / Mr. R. Wilkins / P. Cazalet / 7 11-4 / R. Dennard
(incorrectly spelt Old Peublo in some instances)
Into View / Mrs. P. Brown / F. Winter / 6 10-11 / P. Kelleway
Elliott / Mr. S. Davies / C. Davies / 7 10-11 / B. R. Davies
Sam Butcher / Mrs. D. Cooper / F. Cundell / 5 10-9 / J. CookJust to remind all of us how young we were then, and how old we are now. Those named above, and the list below of other jockeys at Sandown that day, come instantly to mind without having to be jogged, yet it was the best part of half a century ago. There are some bold people indeed in those lists.
Eddie Harty
Ron Atkins
Tim Norman
Stan Mellor
Brough Scott
Josh Gifford
Macer Gifford
Andy Turnell
Jimmy Uttley
Jeff King
Johnny Haine
Bob ChampionNovember 23, 2015 at 17:52 #1222944Some good names there MV, wonder why D Mould wasn’t riding Old Peublo?
Think John Francome considered him the best from that era. Stan Mellor & Josh Gifford were both great jockeys but completely different styles and many considered John Haine the supreme stylist.
I used to love Jeff King riding any horse I backed in the 70’s, there was none better and he made few mistakes.Regards steeplechasing’s original query I don’t think Bula would have gone too high, people knew his style and he was never actually that far behind, just needed to get a run while Into View would have gone much higher (100?).
