. . . . . and a bunch of donkeys for the kids…
But that wouldn’t leave any for the jockeys
January 16, 2009 at 20:44 #204409The Whitby sea breezes have obviously done much for your sense of fun, Paul
January 16, 2009 at 22:06 #204435Conspiracy? Too many good things going in. A bit like Hackney dogs where there used to be lots of big prices. Those where the days.
Hackney dogs…that was such a fair track.
Such a shame it went, so many "samey" dog tracks on BAGS now with a lack of variety in trips.
Zip
Yes, had a few good priced winners there sadly missed.
I hope Great Leighs get it together.
January 16, 2009 at 22:52 #204445I can’t see anything about it on the RPor SL sites, what is/are the specific reason(s) for this action, does anybody know?
I know the course is a shambles, but other courses have merited that description and they haven’t had their licences taken away.

January 16, 2009 at 23:11 #204454Thanks, I must have missed it.
It’s a bit short on details, though!
January 16, 2009 at 23:46 #204469Venusian,
I’m only guessing, but it’s possible that the problem is concerned with payment of prize money funds to Weatherbys. There are very strict deadlines for this for obvious reasons – the money is paid into the owners account about one month after the race.
If ‘restructuring’ means altering the the set-up of the company that runs the course and thus pays out the prize money, the BHA would want to be very certain of getting paid.
Would it be any great surprise if Arena Leisure end up with a bigger share of the track before long?
January 17, 2009 at 02:05 #204506Anyone know if other racecourses have been allowed to operate whilst in administration? Doesn’t look good to me.

Carlton Siddle and Nick Edwards of Deloitte were appointed Joint Administrators of the Companies on 16 January 2009.
The Joint Administrators will be assessing the position of the Companies in order to determine the best outcome for their creditors. They will continue to work with existing management and key business partners to continue to trade the business in the short term, and are currently in discussions with the sport’s regulatory body, the British Horseracing Authority, in respect of securing the course’s racing license and ability to continue to trade as a going concern, while they investigate the opportunity of a sale.
Investors and creditors of the Companies will be sent a formal notification of appointment in due course.
If you have any queries or would like to speak to a member of staff or the Administrators team please call the Companies’ offices on +44 (0) 1245 362 412. Media enquiries should be addressed to Jamie Harley (+44 (0) 207 303 5037) or Vimala Camadoo (+44 (0) 20 7007 5098) at Deloitte’s press office

January 17, 2009 at 04:30 #204559Is the guy who owned Leighs, John Holmes, the same john Holmes I seem to recall appearing in films of a riding nature?

Very good piece, but Julian Muscat according to the byline.

As far as I’m aware, he was Gary Linekers agent, and CEO of SFX Sports, one of the worlds leading sports management companies.

Not the same man so far as I’m aware – Linekers agent spells his name Jon.
The Great Leighs man made his money in property and is usually referred to an ‘Essex entrepreneur’. Which is approximately what the press used to call Terry Ramsden when they were being polite.
