What a fascinating days racing. I didn’t win a bean, but it was such an enjoyable day. I figure it might be fun to add to this thread after each day, and then look back on it in a years time (yes I know, there’s three days left!). If anyone has any pearls of wisdom, please share.
1. Altior will be some tool nxt season over fences. I didn’t think he would be quick enough over 2 miles on good to soft, but that shows what I know. All roads must lead to the Arkle.
2. On a related note to the above, the front two in the Supreme from last year fill the same places in the Arkle. Just goes to show that nothing beats Festival Form. Un De Sceaux against Douvan could be fun next year. Speaking of Festival Form, look out for horses than ran well in the other novice hurdles last season to do well in the Coral Cup/Fred Winter.
3. The Festival Handicap Chase is getting better and better. It used to pay to look at lower weights in the race, and you could make monvey hand over fist backing anything carrying less than 11 stone, but not the trend has reversed. The last three winners have all carried higher marks than ever before, and the first 5 home in today’s race all carried at least 11st7.
4. Christ knows what Willie is going to do with Annie and Faugheen next season. Annie can’t go back to running in egg and spoon races against her own sex after that incredible performance. I might try and get a price on every grade one over two miles on either side of the Irish Sea going either to Faugheen or The Wonder Mare.
5. My Tent Or Yours is some tool to run a race as big as that after 700 days off. I love that horse. It killed me when he didn’t go passed Champagne Fever. It killed my corpse when he couldn’t get passed Jezki. He wears a hood, ear plugs and all kinds of accessories. Stick a balaclava on him for me. The trouble is, I can’t see him winning another race due to point number 4. Such a shame he’s had 2 years off. Oh what might have been.
6. VVM is another top class mare. I’d like to see her jumping fences next season though.
7. JJ O’Neill is a beauty. Minella Rocco can’t jump for 8 months, then wins pulling a cart. Holywell puts his best foot forward again in the spring.
8. Follow Paul Nicholls in all handicaps for the rest of the Festival. Although he doesn’t have the superstars any more, he might have a lot of well handicapped beasts insteads. Much of his string have been slogging through the mud all winter and now the ground has turned up good, we could see plenty of improvement.
Anyone spot anything else?
