That was certainly a war of attrition with only 2 finishing, I’m sure the opponents of racing will lap that up if they saw it.
Horses like Just So would have loved that going and conditions and would have been ready to go out for another circuit or 2.
January 31, 2015 at 16:48 #503600I must say it was painful to watch but full marks to the jockeys that pulled up. Don’t understand why Ch4 didn’t pick up on the fact that the second horse had, in fact, eventually jumped the last and finished. Cause I could hear the cheering in the background and it could only have meant one thing
January 31, 2015 at 16:52 #503601Brilliant to watch – I love a proper test of stamina and would be devastated to see these races taken away.

They did pick it up in the end.
January 31, 2015 at 18:39 #503616Pity they had to sacrifice the races predecessor the 4 miler at Doncaster at least the ground at Town Moor isn’t so testing.
January 31, 2015 at 18:43 #503617Wasn’t the brightest move by Whillans IMO.
January 31, 2015 at 19:02 #503619What happened there?
It looked like he pulled up, did he take the horse back for a run up or something?Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
January 31, 2015 at 19:09 #503620He pulled up, knackered, before the last then spotted he was the only other finisher (behind the winner) so decided to jump the last after all. The horse was fine but not the brightest move to jump with a horse that five seconds earlier he’d considered too tired to finish the race.
January 31, 2015 at 19:15 #503621It was an unedifying spectacle, more like a scene from War Horse than a sporting event.
I don’t think that the end-to-end style of racing we see these days works terribly well with extreme distance events on the sort of quagmire they raced on this afternoon.
January 31, 2015 at 19:48 #503622The second did not pulled up, he refused at the last. So his jockey turned around and tried again. Perfectly within the rules but the was a stewart enquiry. Horse was checked afterwards by the vet at tbe racecourse and is perfectly okay.

You’re getting worse cormack, are you sure you’re involved in the right sport?
The horse was as tired as Outlaw Tom in a number of his races.
He did not pull it up because it was knackered, at least get the facts right. The jockey eased up on the horse going to the last because he knew there was nothing behind him, however this caused the horse to ease up and lose momentum, he did not have enough momentum to jump the fence and wisely aborted.
Safer for both horse and jockey to retrace steps and have another go.
January 31, 2015 at 20:28 #503625Despite the Ffos Las stewards recognising that Whillans had pulled up Gorgehous Lliege his second place was allowed to stand as, according to BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey, the race had not officially finished before he had jumped the last fence.
Above from RP
He didn’t refuse RR, he pulled up.
The horse was fine yes, but still doesn’t make it a good decision from the jockey. How would we be feeling if he’d fallen and the horse or jockey had been injured? Would it have been a good decision then?
January 31, 2015 at 20:36 #503627The jockey eased up on the horse going to the last because he knew there was nothing behind him, however this caused the horse to ease up and lose momentum, he did not have enough momentum to jump the fence and wisely aborted.
Is that a factual portrayal of events Eddie or your interpretation?
My interpretation (supported by the reported facts) are that he pulled up as the horse was all out. He then cottoned onto the fact that if he finished he’d take second place so had a go at the last.
January 31, 2015 at 21:38 #503635From the BHA
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Callum Whillans, the rider of GORGEHOUS LLIEGE (FR), had pulled the gelding up before the last fence when it appeared to be tiring in the Heavy ground, and then walked away from the fence, cantered in and proceeded to jump the last to finish second, beaten 99 plus lengths. They interviewed the rider and the Veterinary Officer, who stated that the gelding had finished tired but not exhausted. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards accepted the rider’s explanation that, noticing there were no other finishers behind him and after giving his horse a breather, he jumped the last fence without difficulty and cantered to the line.January 31, 2015 at 21:49 #503639It was an ugly spectacle on that ground and over that distance. McCoy once said that "there is heavy, then there is Ffos Las heavy".Chepstow, Uttoxeter and Lingfield pretty gruelling as well.
January 31, 2015 at 22:12 #503642I was watching the second horse from aroind 3 fences out and he was absolutely out on his feet and in my mind he should NOT have jumped the last fence. In hindsight yes he was OK but he could so easily have fallen and laid on the ground winded for a seriously long time. Very poor judgement from the jockey. Its not about prize money, the welfare of the horse should have been number one in his mind.
January 31, 2015 at 23:57 #503647The winner has been labelled soft by some in the past.Seemed a very good ride. I think a lot depends on the form of his stable which can hit some real lows. A good few of them are running better now. Hope it heralds a revival for At Fishers Cross.
As regards the runner up, I would have thought the extra few seconds the horse was given to fill his lungs would have made all the difference in him being able to jump the last.
