Dunno, was Asil Nadir ever on course? was Dodger McCartney a character ? Erroll Brown, Des O’Connor and Tony Knowles may have been seen on course
June 2, 2017 at 09:34 #1302959Yes I remember seeing Errol Brown on course on several occasions – and of course Dodger but he was still around tormenting the bookies until his sad death in the 00’s
June 2, 2017 at 11:39 #1302980There appeared in the late 70’s or early 80’s a rails layer who was absolutely fearless. Shortish chap, usually sporting a large black fedora and always attracting large followings by his rails pitch. The Sporting Life would run title page reports on his previous day’s activities. Didn’t last too long but seem to remember his name being ‘Rogers’.
June 2, 2017 at 12:03 #1302983The difference between McCririck and other ‘characters’ is that he was false; he manufactured his character. He’s an actor.
All he did for racing to my mind was reinforce its 1950s image for the media – loud mouth, loud suits, big cigars, flash jewellery, leering at ‘birds’. Whether this attracted or repelled potential fans, who knows? Probably fifty-fifty.
Ramsden always struck me on TV as being a bit dour give his reputation. I like Curley. What you got was 100% him at all times; nothing false. If I ever saw Bird interviewed, it certainly hasn’t stuck with me.
Given the choice, I’d rather have gone racing with Jeffrey Bernard than everyone else put together.
