Serious question (don’t ask why, it would take too long). I’d be grateful for any knowledgeable answers.

February 28, 2013 at 21:37 #430825I didn’t know there were any well-known UK Mormons in any profession to be honest!
As I understand it The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints rails vehemently against the perils of gambling so it’s unlikely that too many are involved in racing.
Along with others who maybe slightly slow-of-thinking, they probably think it’s all bent anyway.

March 1, 2013 at 09:09 #430859Don’t forget that some Mormom financiers helped to fund the building of the early Las Vegas casinos back in the 1930s along with the Mafia bosses. Here’s the Wiki entry about it:
"On July 3, 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed the appropriation bill for the Boulder Dam. The dam was later renamed the Hoover Dam during the Truman administration. Work started on the dam in 1931 and Las Vegas’ population swelled from around 5,000 citizens to 25,000, with most of the newcomers looking for a job building the dam. However, the demographic of the work force consisting of males from across the country with no attachment to the area created a market for large scale entertainment.
A combination of local Las Vegas business owners, Mormon financiers, and Mafia crime lords helped develop the casinos and showgirl theaters to entertain the largely male dam construction workers
."
Also a lot of Mormons work in the casinos. Perfect staff for that really, moral and upright and not inclined to screw the customers or their bosses.

It’s an odd question all right. Perhaps checking out the Mormon Wisdom on the forum.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Enough already.

Your rhetorical question or more correctly, rhetorical truism is rather spoilt by the errant inclusion of an m too many, though one can forgive any spellchecker for assuming mormon is a synonym
Drone – church of the latter-day cynics
p.s. Donny Osmond and Drone both descended onto this mortal coil on 9.12.57 – puppy love and crazy horses
March 2, 2013 at 11:25 #431019Anyone going to see the new ‘Mormon’ musical in London? Have been learning up a bit on the Mormons as I’ve ben watching the Ken Burns documentary about the American West [along with the documentary about The Civil War]. This was because I wanted some background information before I went to see Lincoln, the film. Didn’t realise there were 22 hours of documentary, though. Still, it kept me occupied during the spell of bad weather. No mention of racehorses, though.
March 2, 2013 at 11:43 #431024Didn’t Jilted John once insist that
"Gordon is a Mormon"
?
I’m here all week.

Just watched his doc on the Dust Bowl catastrophe this week. Only horses were the ones pulling ploughs, but it was quite enlightening about the "cause and effect" side of things.
March 2, 2013 at 14:34 #431041Well it’s been very amusing reading your comments (as I guessed it would be).
I’m asking on behalf of someone who takes an interest in these sort of things but isn’t a horse-racing follower.March 2, 2013 at 23:39 #431101Find Ken/Rik Burns documentaries totally enthralling [the one about the Donner party was fascinating, as was the one about Coney Island]; the only problem being that there’s something very relaxing [even described by the Observer as ‘hypnotic’] about them, so I tend to fall asleep half way through and then have to watch them again . Mind you, am also fascinated by what this thread is about. Am wondering how many Scientologists are interested in racing [especially given their obsession with success of all kinds]. Did you know that the members of The Incredible String Band, that most hippy of groups, became Scientologists?
