Given all the different arms, pulling in different directions, congratulations to the sport on the whole, who united with its support behind Tony Mccoy. Just shows what can happen if everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet!
Great PR and marketing of AP, and lets hope the exposure and coverage garners more punters, fans and racegoers in the near future.
December 20, 2010 at 15:16 #333343Well done for what? Getting the whole of racing to phone a number and then press redial repeatedly. Yeah, well done. A good sideshow to get some appreciation for RfC and buy some time…..
I thought the time racing was allocated last night was superb.

Now how about tackling a few real issues?
December 20, 2010 at 15:25 #333346It CERTAINLY cant do any harm
in JTS’s pink slip land
and possibly nowthe hatter
can forget about Lee’s charming handicap
and give us a broad smile
from her second faceDecember 20, 2010 at 15:57 #333349Come on Jose – you’d need to be a particular sort of curmudgeon not to see McCoy’s winning of that award as a positive for racing in general.

Bah humbug! Lighten up, gramps!

I’m a particular sort of something – no doubt about that.

Sorry, forgive my cynical nature for a second, but McCoy could of won this with less votes than he got in 2002.
I find it hard to see why the three lettered organisations would oppose McCoy winning for any reason tbh, regardless of my own personal feelings. The ROA weren’t suddenly going to state that jockeys were overpaid; the NTF weren’t going to complain about McCoy’s riding; and the BHA weren’t going to put on the front of their website a list of McCoy’s whip bans. McCoy could have done more damage with his yet to be resolved RUK spat….. but it’s a vote to win.
The most significant part was ensuring McCoy’s nomination by the clueless journalists, and for that RfC and Rodders did what was necessary holding the open media days, along with some pressure applied by bookmakers installing him as favourite.
"Racing Uniting" is great – but this was for a cause that will have no obvious long term benefit. As ever with this sport, measuring the obvious benefits are tough, but if the BBC sign up to show more NH racing in the next week I’ll admit I’m wrong.
And I’ll just end on this. Will McCoy be nominated again next year? Or will anyone from Horse Racing be nominated?
December 20, 2010 at 20:24 #333359I agree with Jose – if McCoy winning BBC SPOTY changes anything at all I will be staggered. I’m a lover of sport in general but I cannot remember the last time I was able to stomach even watching the drivel churned out on the programme itself. True to form, I was channel surfing for something, anything, to watch instead after the first five minutes.
Those in charge of racing seem to have fallen into the trap of the politician’s syllogism:
We need to do something.
This is something.
We must do it.December 20, 2010 at 21:09 #333363You have to be a bit of a sad twisted cynic not to have applauded AP"s much deserved success last night, anyone who resents his victory is no supporter of horse racing and obviously has a negative outlook on life in general! Negativeity in horse racing breeds losers just as it does in life!

December 20, 2010 at 21:38 #333366Get your plaudits in now.
Racing only has about six hours to make the most of AP’s Sports Personality win before tomorrow’s sports pages go to print & everyone outside of racing forgets all about it.
