We’ve seen that as regards big races in particular on the flat go, jockeys now adopt an "anything goes" mentality and make no effort to keep their mounts straight e.g. Buick on Elusive Kate and Doyle on Al Kazeeem.
They know that they can hamper opponents and more likely keep the race under current rules by getting past the post first. Worst that will happen is a couple of days ban for interference.
Was at Fontwell today and there was a controversial finish to the concluding mares bumper. Thought that Twiston Davies was joining us in the stands! NH stewards threw out the first past the post (by length and a quarter) fav and gave O’Brien 4 days for careless. Apparently TV pundit Fitzgerald stated that first past the post would keep the race.
I say well done the stewards. The rules need looking at anyway but action needed to be taken before someone was badly injured.
September 8, 2013 at 22:09 #450633I have two thoughts, yes absolutely right the correct decision was made in the race and Sam Twiston-Davies and his horse were lucky to avoid a nasty incident almost being put through the rail.
Secondly what a joke Mick Fitzgerald continues to be on ATR, in that bumper he kept talking about the wrong horse and rider that was impeded, and that was after earlier being amazed at the slow motion finish to the first race, obviously not occurring to him that it was inexperienced horses having to run uphill on rain softened ground.

Seemed to me O’Brien had his head down and not looking where he was going.Value Is EverythingSeptember 9, 2013 at 02:07 #450675Delighted to see stewards acting in their correct role and doing what should be done in such cases.
September 9, 2013 at 07:12 #450681I think O’Brien knew exactly what he was doing and was extremely fortunate to only get four days.
September 9, 2013 at 12:18 #450689Must not Jockeys be assumed to know what they are doing? Otherwise why put them up?
