Do these tracks not have plows?

Lingfield already abandoned today for the second day running.

An extra all-weather meeting already scheduled at Wolverhampton on Tuesday. Surprising that an extra jumps meeting has been scheduled at Ayr for Wednesday.

We always used to be told years ago that, because of the effects of the Gulf Stream, Ayr enjoyed remarkably mild temperatures. Hope that proves to be the case.

Certainly gives the lie to the expression "all-weather".

"Some weather", "most weather" or "all-weather if the weather doesn’t get too bad" might be more appropriate.

Paul Ostermeyer’s insistence on using the term "artificial surface", including using the initials "AS" in his fixture listings on his website, is certainly being justified again. :D

How about "Artificial Racing Surface" or ARS for short?

I like that – I may even change my web site to use that instead of AS

No, but they do have ploughs.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

Even though the all-weather is the cancer of uk racing I thought I would give it a fair crack of the whip today.before ch4 racing went on air I painted my living room door and spent an hour watching it dry then watched the racing for an hour to see what was more exciting.the result??? It was inconclusive

I had a rare Saturday afternoon at home and did a variation of my usual at home theme.

Instead of going and making a cup of tea / loo break / flip to the News channel during the commercial breaks I went out and made a cup of tea whilst the races were taking place.

It actually made the program quite tolerable.

It’s the first time I’ve seen the new C4 coverage in any detail and it obviously wasn’t a typical afternoons racing but it was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Not sure about the Val Doonican look for the presenters though, especially Nick

It’s just so annoying and totally unnecessary for Nick Luck and others to be dressed in the Val Doonican jumpers.

They’ll be having Nick sitting in Val’s old rocking chair at this rate.

Even in the dumbed-down days of the Highflyer productions of Channel 4 racing, the main male presenters changed in to a suit and tie for the main programme, even if they had been in more casual clothes for the Morning Line.

The normally suave and smart Mike Cattermole was the worst offender on the Morning Line, deliberately dressing down to such a degree that he wore a pair of faded, scruffy jeans that appeared to have been loaned to him by a garage mechanic, along with a ridiculously overly unbuttoned shirt and the scruffiest trainers he could find.

But at least he was back in his suit and tie for the main programme, out in the fresh air with Emma. Nick can’t be bothered evidently.

Then why can’t they use them? If the tracks in upstate New York cancelled every time it snowed they wouldn’t have any racing at all.

It does actually take a lot more work to winterize a snythetic surface than a dirt surface. With dirt tracks you can just add sand. A synthetic track will get really fast and hard (and dangerous) in freezing weather if it isn’t managed carefully. Woodbine, Arlington Park and Turfway had some issues with this when they first installed their tracks.

Kempton abandoned due to ice crystals on the track so that’s every all weather track that’s abandoned due to snow and ice.

Yes, Steve, and all the turf meetings are getting called off two days in advance. Sometimes the weather is too bad for any racing, world continues revolving and we get on with other things.
