I recall 1987 Ebor meeting was run on very deep ground – Triptych winning the Matchmaker International with Steve Cauthen on board where they all (except for Most Welcome) came up the centre/standside of the course (back in the day when always stayed on the far side) where even the TV pictures that usually make the picture look brighter than it is were so dingy it was hard to pick out the jockey silks.
Reference Point (1-14F) in the 3 runner Voltigeur (where one came down standside on his own) hit a false patch of deep ground inside the final furlong that ripped his shoe off and even in the Ebor they came centre to standside even though the weather had improved by then.August 8, 2021 at 19:34 #1553974Does anyone remember a joggers Golden Highway next to the rails at York in the early nineties? There was a faster strip right next to the rails where all the joggers had been running and had compacted the ground, making it faster. Jockeys used to make a beeline for the rails and stay there. Mark Birch on Palatial Style in the Andy Capp Handicap sticks in the mind as a prime example.

I used to run round the track every Sunday morning and that strip was used by joggers and dog walkers alike.
I was always convinced it further accentuated the 5f dog-leg draw bias as the horse racing right against the rail won a disproportionate number of handicaps during that time.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 8, 2021 at 20:16 #1553982I think Redcar had a golden highway strip which the hosepipes didn’t reach.
I didn’t even know joggers were permitted on the actual courses! Is this still the case? Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Can imagine Harry Findlay and friends sweating profusely while jogging up and down creating a nice strip for their chosen plunge. Or Barney paying Mo Farah to run up and down the straight for a few hours.
