What allowance did you make for the tail wind Ginger?
Hope you didn’t forget about itI wasn’t aware of any Eddie. If so then yes, it would’ve been a factor to consider and may be ground conditions are not as firm as times suggest.
EDIT: RUK says there was indeed a fairly strong head wind.
Morrison said there was a tail wind and that it was a factor in the fast times.
You wouldn’t believe it would you, the guy was stood on the track when he said it. I did have my doubts when he said it when I caught a glimpse of a flag. The guys a bluffer, said be wary of the fav in the Coventry, 6 out of the last 10 have been beaten he said.
Don’t know how some of them get jobs.
June 17, 2014 at 17:48 #482724Looking at the going allowance for Ascot today I had it at
+0.13s/f
(good).
Turf going allowance table:
Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f
Good/soft -0.55s/f to -0.28s/f
Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/fHootenanny
the 2yo winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes has achieved the highest speed figure of
100
(without WFA) for a 2yo over 5f furlongs I have ever seen, so much so, if you add the WFA allowance his time performance beats
Sole Power’s
earlier win on the card.
Even for a 3yo this would have been a time performance out of the top draw.
As they say, the jury is still out on this one…
Mike.

Think Stickels and The Blues Brother know best
Incidentally Steve Mellish has just said there was a tail wind yesterday like Morrison. Who said it was a headwind Gingertipster?

I meant tail wind Eddie.
I’d say (if no
tail
wind today) it is on first look good-firm, bordering on firm today.

Do you still think it is good ground Eddie? The ground is good to firm and good on the round course Gingertipster, do try and keep up
The going stick readings tell you that, Stickels is spot on with his description of the going even if you and Timeform aren’t. Nothing wrong with it for flat racing is there? Or are you blaming the two deaths yesterday on the going again?

A full 3.1 seconds faster than standard on the round course, in a course record time… and still it is "good" ground.
It is good-firm if not firm Eddie, the times tell you that.
Value Is EverythingJune 18, 2014 at 17:11 #482902Looking at the going allowance for Wednesdays card at Royal Ascot,
I ended up with a going allowance of+0.27s/f
(good to firm)
Turf going allowance table:
Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f

Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/fThe clerk of the course Chris Stickels says he is going to put down
4 mils of water tonight, that should keep the going the same at good to firmJune 18, 2014 at 18:00 #482917A full 3.1 seconds faster than standard on the round course, in a course record time… and still it is "good" ground.

If your assertion is correct that it could be firm then I’m sure you would agree that it is perfectly safe ground for flat racing
However though Stickels watered when he shouldn’t have he has been totally honest when describing the ground unlike Prosser.
You would expect quality animals to be running fast times on good to firm ground, that’s what they should be running on.
November 19, 2014 at 11:42 #495737Interesting to read that ruby Walsh was surprised about the state of the ground for the open meeting after all the water chucked on the course aged of the showcase in October.
This is a classic case of putting the cart before the horse due to JCR greed and has resulted in mid winter ground at cheltenham in November!April 13, 2022 at 18:11 #1593467I see Newmarket watered overnight (3mm) to maintain good ground (going stick 7.00)
What was the reason for that when the directive is to produce good to firm ground with watering?
Was it to accomodate Native Trail, who has plenty of knee action and changed his legs going into the dip? What’s wrong with having good to firm ground for flat racing?
April 13, 2022 at 18:40 #1593470“What’s wrong with having good to firm ground for flat racing?”
Absolutely nothing. It ought to be the ideal ground. It allows horses to put up performances like this:
April 13, 2022 at 19:13 #1593473I agree it was unnecessary.
However, with the trial coming just three weeks from the Guineas, suspect Newmarket have done some research and found not just Appleby but many trainers reluctant to run potential Classic horses on good-firm so close to the Guineas. In theory risking something so minor as soreness either keeping them out of the big one entirely or having less chance because of setting back training.Tuesday times weren’t far from Racing Post Standard and Native Trail actually 0.09 fast. So if truly “Good” ground it was in all probability towards the good-firm side of Good.
Value Is EverythingApril 13, 2022 at 19:38 #1593479Don’t forget the healthy tail wind Ginger, signposted by Lydia & Eddie prior to racing.
Watering wasn’t even mentioned by ITV, not sure they either knew or cared but they did have sectional times with no analysis, which would be of interest to a tiny minority of their viewers.
April 13, 2022 at 20:32 #1593501They didn’t put nearly enough water on it for Pocket The Profit.
Found it all a lot different from the Pontefract mud.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 13, 2022 at 22:13 #1593567Having watched ITV I wasn’t aware of that, you make a good point Yeats.
In that case there was definitely no case for watering.
