I don’t think I have ever seen any a jockey make so little effort on a 1/3 shot. Presumably, the horse didn’t have a physical problem otherwise he would have been pulled it up. You have Ennis in the ATR studio talking about Walsh ‘going for it’. I can only imagine he was auditioning for a new Specsavers advert. If a jockey can effectively get away with making virtually no effort on a long odds on favourite then how can anyone have the slightest confidence in way the sport is being policed.
November 27, 2016 at 13:55 #1274588This will look even worse at the end of the season after Battleford has won the Grade 1 ‘Neptune’ at Cheltenham. The strangest ride I have ever seen from Ruby was his ‘effort’ on ‘Un des sceaux’ in the Champion chase against ‘Sprinter Sacre’..There was no effort!
November 27, 2016 at 14:02 #1274591Ruby does this all the time when he knows a horse is beaten. He has ridden thousands of horses and thousands of winners, he clearly knew battleford hadn’t enough left in the tank so why get stuck into him and give him a hard race. It is better in the long run to look after the horse.

On the basis of what you are saying he could go out and cheat on every single ride because he knows better than everyone else. I have no problem in a jockey having made an effort then easing a tired horse down. In this instance he didn’t make anything like sufficient effort in the first place. You get the strong impression that Walsh feels he is above any rules but if any jock goes out and rides a 1/3 shot like that with no repercussions then the game is heading over a cliff.

Yep, no doubt he will lag up over Christmas somewhere and then be down to 10’s :)
November 27, 2016 at 16:00 #1274788He seemed to go from cantering to having little left in the space of a hundred yards. My first thought was a breathing problem or possibly bleeding. The latter happens a good deal more often than is reported.
November 27, 2016 at 18:43 #1274811I FIND IRISH RACING QUITE STRANGE. AS I LOVE WATCHING THE 25 HORSE FIELD IN A MAIDEN HURDLES RACES. BECAUSE I FIND AT LEAST HALF THE FIELD IS SCOOLING IN PUBLIC. NOTHING EVER SAID.
WITH RUBY TODAY IT LOOKED LIKE SCHOOLING IN PUBLIC. AS LIKE SAID BY PEOPLE ERLIER HE NEVER TRIED AN INCH AT ANYTIME BY MY OPINION. I KNOW ITS NOT WORTH A LOT BUT THATS JUST ME
November 27, 2016 at 18:57 #1274818Have to agree, a very strange ride and even stranger that nothing was said.
I have looked at the Irish Stewards reports but nothing on there as jockeys will sometimes report stuff to the stewards that will be published.
I thought the horse would be pulled up but still managed 4th with no effort whatsoever. I do think that Walsh is arrogant and probably thinks he is above the rules. The problem is if no one says or does nothing then he is right.
You could perhaps undertsand it if Mullins horses were not fit but I don’t think for a minute that Mullins sends horses to the races that are not ready to win.November 27, 2016 at 19:31 #1274830HAVE TO AGREE DROFFATS. MULLINS LIKE ELLIOT DONT LIKE LOSING. SO ALL GO OUT FIT AS HE CAN GET THEM
November 27, 2016 at 20:45 #1274844It will be in racing post tomorrow
“HORSE BEATEN AT ODDS ON IN FIRST RUN OF SEASON”
how many of these threads have there been in last 2 month? the ONLY time they come out even half a chance is Novice Chases where they have HAD to have been schooled.
IF you back theses types there is no hope for ya !
November 27, 2016 at 21:55 #1274856Battleford has moved up smoothly enough turning in and and has not come under pressure when he lurches noticeably left going into the third last, and gives the one on his inside a bump. Ruby tries to shake him up right after it but within a few strides his fingers look to me to clutch the neckstrap and there is no more reins movement. My guess is tack problems, perhaps just as they went into that hurdle.
Even if that was the case, they should have had him in and asked why he effectively stopped riding after three out. Either the problem righted itself or he felt balanced enough on the run-in to switch to the rail and run on again.

It was strange when they actually pulled in Geraghty but look what happened in that case. The summing up in the Appeal made no logical sense but he still walked away.
If the Stewards were willing and able to do their job Walsh should have got a minimum 30 days for making insufficient effort.

He knew he was beaten at Cheltenham.
He did something similar on Senewalk recently – appeared to be going sweetly but was already squeezing his legs when the others came alongside. A couple of bumps and he didn’t give the horse a hard race
Blow By Blow will win the Neptune if he isn’t running in a Soft ground supreme,
November 28, 2016 at 22:35 #1274948Excellent piece by Kevin Blake on ATR website. He may disagree with the ride but does agree that questions should have been asked. He does appear a lone voice. We used to have Big Mac at one time and like or loath him he did speak out and said what a lot of ordinary punters thought.

I always chuckle when I see leading writer and Kevin Blake in the same sentence. Is the standard really that low?
This is more online chip paper. Typically, he tries to align himself with the punter while at the same time trying to defend the indefensible. Who shall I have a pop at, the Stewards or Walsh? No contest is it.
It appears Blake and his ilk are literally frightened to death of the likes of Walsh. To put it bluntly they need to grow some.
If as he suggests the Stewards might have agreed with his opinion then they shouldn’t be officiating on any racecourse in any country.
November 29, 2016 at 19:28 #1275013Stilvi maybe you are right but I don’t see anyone else tackling the subject. That was my point.

Yes, I can see what you are saying but when you look what Blake has written he is taking a pop at the Stewards (easy target) and unbelievably defending the ride.
You actually tackle the issue by giving Walsh what he deserves, a lengthy ban. If you don’t you are effectively saying you can carry on repeating that sort of ride (actually it is a nonsense to even describe it as a ride) over and over again.
Who is running racing Walsh or the Stewards?
I think there is a strong argument for a panel to look at blatant mistakes like this in a similar way they do with incidents that have been missed by football referees.
