The last race at Kelso today was delayed while the sun went behind the distant hills. Reason was that it would have been in the eyes of the runners when they approached the last fence. Waiting a few minutes saved having to miss out the obstacle on all three circuits in the staying chase.

Were you at Kelso Rob? I used to go to every meeting there but haven’t been for years.

I was wondering if the place has changed much in the last 10 years

Yes I went to Kelso. I can’t tell you how much it’s changed recently since my first visit was in October 2006, but it strikes me as a very pleasant country course. The view from top of the ‘old stand’ is superb, and the food in the Tweedie Stand better and cheaper than that served at many courses.

For those interested, my notes on the days racing have been posted in the Notebook Section, and on my blog

I thought this was an incredibly wise decision…well done Kelso! Perhaps they might save their reputation yet…

    Agree well done Kelso.

Robnorth – well done to you also. Enjoying reading your blogg, great idea.

A quote from your blogg " STRONG RESOLVE has had a pretty decent career including some sparkling form in 04/05. He proved he’s no back number in this event, and lived up to his name to hold on from No Picnic. Strong Resolve led or was prominent all the way, but looked second best turning for home. However, he dug deep on the run-in to get up close home."

Some very good race comments on your blogg Roborth I look forward to reading more. :)

    cheers

A lovely sum up of Strong Resolve’s run.
We are all thrilled to see him back to his old self and hopefully we will see much more of him in the coming months…

    Thanks Lekha

All credit to the Fife representative No Picnic for making the old boy pull out the stops. A cracking contest with everything that’s good about National Hunt racing.

i must agree with the comments regarding common sense waiting till the sun went behind the cheviots. am i missing somthing blatantly obvious but if they know what time the sun goes down why have races due to start, surely they could run the races earlier!!!!!…………there again that wouldnt suit the real people who run racing…….the big 4,just my opinion, chipmunk

If you were going to run this race earlier to avoid the problem of the low sun then I reckon it would have had to have been run at least 40 minutes earlier. The sun having set actually eased the problem. There’s plenty of light even when the sun has gone behind the hills, so if anything, timing the race to start slightly later might have been more help. There was a 12.10 start for the 7 race card anyway, any earlier and we would all have been eating breakfast at the course!

Running them earlier didn’t help at a Kelso meeting sometime this year, when fences were omitted due to ‘low sun’ in a race that was scheduled two and a half hours before sunset.

I blame the people who laid these courses in the first place.

Didn’t they have the foresight to see that in this day and age we can’t have horses jumping fences when the jocks and horses can’t see the damn fences!?!?! 8)

Can’t we fit horses with Raybans?

Supposedly the problem with low sun at Cheltenham is because a building has been removed that used to stop that happening [was it when the new Centaur building was built?]. You sometimes wonder who gets paid how much when planning things like this – as for Kelso, I can’t imagine it’s change over the years and I hope to goodness it never does! Wish I was there to see dear old Strong Resolve win the other day [saw him at Bangor though], would have loved to cheer him home…

The new buildings at Cheltenham have had no effect on the low sun issue. If you look at old photos of the stands from down the track it is obvious.

Low sun is a modern jockey phenomenon.
