I bet Torn and Frayed in The Paddy Power Gold Cup, and I thought he ran well for a fair way, before his tired fall late on. That was his first run in the best part of two years, so no concerns with him tiring late on. Really liked him two years ago, before his setback, and confident he’s better than current mark. Doubt I’ll beat the current 25’s, but I’ll certainly top up if I see bigger.

The type of race where I like a couple, and a fair chance it’ll be Solo

    Torn and Frayed 25’s

I haven’t bet him, but I want one here who I know will give me at the very least a spin for my money. That one is Fugitif.

His price shouldn’t move much from the 12-1, so I can afford to wait

I’ll be all over Thunder Rock here.

Seemed to finally come of age at Carlisle in the Colin Parker. Was a very taking performance and tossed aside some good horses easily.

Il ridoto must be the most exposed 6 year old that’s ever set foot on a racecourse and the others just don’t have the right profile or ability for the race imo.

    Strong selection this for me.

Olly Murphy talking up the chances for Thunder rock.

Murphy, who landed Sandown’s Listed novice hurdle with Booster Bob on Saturday, said: “The December Gold Cup is the plan and he’s been trained specifically for the race since he won at Carlisle.

“He’s been in very good form since then and I’m looking forward to running him. There’s plenty of form stacking up well for him, which is good to see, and he’s got the right sort of mark for the race.

“It’s going to be his first run in a big handicap and we’ll have to see how he handles that experience, but I think he has a really attractive profile for the race, he’s in good form and it’s a good prize.”

It was a good performance at Carlisle last time and Sean got on well with him,” said Murphy. “Getting that little bit more experience over fences before we tackle a big handicap like this was important.

“I actually thought he ran very well over course and distance last season in the Dipper. He handles the track fine and I don’t think there is going to be a massive field looking at the entries.

“We looked at the Peterborough Chase, which was sadly off, and if he was going to win a race like that then he must have a very good chance of winning a handicap off a mark of 146 for a lot of money.”

“I threw him in at the deep end a few times last season and turning in at Sandown in the Scilly Isles I thought he would win,” said Murphy. “He ran well when you look at what the winner has done since.

“He then went to Cheltenham and I didn’t feel he stayed three miles in the Brown Advisory. Things didn’t quite go to plan at Ayr and he might have been a slightly unlucky loser after missing the last.

“I hope he has a future in Graded chases, but Saturday will tell us an awful lot more. He jumped well at Carlisle and hopefully he will be big enough and robust enough to carry on as a chaser.”

Backed into 4’s from 8’s according to Barry Orr.

I do feel he’s going there with a cracking chance and he also won’t mind what the ground does.

Jay Jay Reilly and Easy As That for me
I think both will like the New Course and there’s not much rain forecast between now and Saturday

Easy As That stayed on late in the Paddy Power and JJR looks to have a nice handicap in him

I always like a horse proven over the course in these races, and as far as I can tell only Torn and Frayed has actually won at Cheltenham, though both Fakir d’Oudairies and Fugitif have come pretty close in competitive races.

Ridoto won over this exact course and distance in January this year – same race that Torn and Frayed won in 2022.

So Scottish 6-1 ew 4 places

Mark Walsh coming over to ride for Emmet Mullins and JP. Fakir D’oudairies in there to keep the weights down. Might be one of them plot jobs.

Added Fugitif 8-1 ew 4 places from the race last month as the first time cheekpieces didn’t work then as ran too free and they are off this time.

I’ve backed Grandeur D’ame, big step up in grade on last time and running out of the weights aren’t ideal but one of the least exposed in here and it did look a big career best last time, jumped lovely, could be more to come. Didn’t think there was much in here thrown in, Monmiral is if he is on a going day but he’s got as many hard luck stories on his form page as actual runs. I may have a saver on him.

Fugitif and Il Ridoto were stuffed in the handicap last time, not just by Stage Star but by Notlongtillmay. They’ve had plenty of chances in these types of race, I can’t see them being well enough handicapped. So Scottish didn’t really have any excuses in the plate, he’s closely matched with Fugitif and Il Ridoto and if I don’t think they’re handicapped to win he’s not either on that showing, needs the tongue tie to do the business, entitled to improve with age etc. Obvious case for Thunder Rock but he didn’t jump well in the Dipper and they ended up trying him in the Brown Advisory not the Turners, I think they were correct regards the trip he’s just not at that level. Fakir is classy but regressing and he’s never been rated higher than 167 so its not like he’s thrown in here if he’s to win.

Just twelve runners, on soft ground, with a quarter of the field Irish; what’s going on British trainers? £74K to the winner and bottom horse rated 129! I despair.

Two for me in this, with Fugitif at 8-1, and Il Ridoto at 13-2

It’s really just about Torn and Frayed for me, but having a saver on Do Your Job at 33’s. He’s done nothing to justify that support, but going back a bit, there’s definitely ability in there somewhere

I’ve changed my mind on this race and gone for Monmiral ew 5 places. Just think Cobden not choosing Il Ridoto after a gallop last week looks significant and Nicholls sounded hopeful that they got Monmiral back to form. If So Scottish or Fugitif win then so be it.

Cromwell’s Railway Hurricane for me at 22s.
The young lad takes 5lb off.

I’ve been following and betting Cromwell’s horses this season and the trainer has a good strike rate at Cheltenham.
A bit of a punt but these Irish ‘raiders’ often catch the British handicapper out. :good:
