One of the great betting handicaps and a tough nut to crack. Ripp Orf is back for more,
having taken this last year. He showed he’s right at home here when he won the valuable
Cunard Handicap last September over 7f, and followed up with a decent 2nd in the even more
valuable Challenge Cup here in October. He’s not done much in his last 3, but he keeps his
best for here and although he’d have to do it carrying 12lb more that last year he’s bound
to be in the mix. Definitely shortlisted and 12/1 is reasonable.

Cape Byron is just about favourite in the market, as short as 7/1 in a place,
which might seem a bit strange for a horse that’s not got his head in front for the best part
of 2 years (here over 1m), but he did put in an eye catching run over c/d in 2nd behind Ripp Orf
and this has likely been the plan since then. Roger Varian’s stable is on fire at the moment so
he must have a major shout.

David Barron’s Kynran (10/1) only found Auxerre too good in the Lincoln, and that one is
better than a handicapper. He’s another that hasn’t won for a while, but as he went off at 9/2
in the Lincoln he must have been showing plenty at home. Barron has won this before, albeit a
while back in 2006, and he must fancy his chances here.

Roger Charlton’s Blue Mist absolutely trotted up here over a mile last October, and at 4
he’s open to improvement. He’s 12/1 but I’d expect a bit of a run on him if he takes his chance.
William Haggas is another who managed to bag this, with Fastnet Tempest 2 years back. His runner
Nicklaus was gutsy winner last back end at Yarmouth. He’s 16/1 at the moment, but
he’s another 4yr old open to improvement and any move in the market would be significant.

In short there’s plenty, many of whom I haven’t mentioned, in with decent chances, but the one that
gets the penalty of carrying my cash is Remarkable at 16/1. He won the same Cunard Handicap that Ripp Orf did, but that was on the previous year (2017). He has had his
problems since then and was off the course for over a year and a half. He reemerged in March,
having been transferred from John Gosden to David O’Meara, and I thought his run behind Sharja
Bridge, a running on 4th after having dwelt at the start, was a really encouraging run. He’s running
here off the same mark that he won the Cunard Handicap back in 2016, and I think he is well worth
a punt at those odds :good:

    Good stuff Graham.

Only a small early go for me, but happy with the way Ptarmigan Ridge is going just now.

Hopefully the price will hold, as I’d like to bet each way at that price with the extra places, so win only just now.

Cheers Bobby, and good luck with PR. He’s certainly at the right end of the handicap, even
with the 3lb rise for running a good race behind Safe Voyage, who I fancied a lot in the
Haydock race. Just Ladbrokes/Coral with the 16s, I’m not sure that will last to when the
extra places appear, but best of luck with him :good:

I have backed three in this.

My old mate KYNREN at 10/1 will love the ground and is sooo consistent but that might be what keeps him from winning one of these big handicaps!
TAUREAN STAR at 33/1 which I think is a huge price considering last year he had a run then won at Goodwood off 87 and runs off 89 here! If he gets the splits at the right time he will go close!
ALEMARATALYOUM at 33/1 I hope I have spelt this right but anyway if the ground is soft enough this guy will love it here.

The only thing that worries me is they are all drawn high

    Good Luck Guys :good: :good:

Nice write up Graham :good: but you left out the winner..Lol

GREEN POWER was doing all his best work at Newmarket when 3rd to Flavius Titus and Summerghand at the Craven Meeting in April, He was quite heavily backed that day so felt he was expected to run well and Ryan Moore was on board.
Tomorrow Tom Queally takes the ride as Moore otherwise
engaged and feel he has a good chance to win this if he keeps him up with the pace. :good: Jac

Cheers Jac, I did have a good look at Green Power and he’s a very decent animal, the
only thing that I wasn’t sure of was whether he’d get the trip. Having said that, I
see that Ryan Moore had commented after his good run at Newmarket that they should
consider this race. It just shows what I know

He’s such a big price Graham but only going on what I saw, he’s a front runner so remains to be seen if he can do it. If Ryan had been riding he would have been much shorter..good luck with Remarkable Graham and fingers crossed..Jac :good:

With Ptarmigan not going, I’ve went with Nicholas T at 66’s ew to the six places.

Bet him a few times, and although he should come up short, I can see him making the 6’s, and possibly even a lay in running.

This is a race I almost left but after much consideration, I’ve plumped for two each way selections.

    Remarkable 28-1

Honestly thought Kaeso had it there, nice try.

GL to those that were on the winner, good performance.

Roger Varian on fire as you said Graham :good: What a season he’s having. Makes you wonder how Ripp Orff could finish so far behind him. I

We’ll done with Kynren Raymo and MoM a terrific run from him in 2nd. :good:

Should have been noted that Roger Varian hot footed it over from Lingfield with Andrea Atzeni to pick up this ride, completely missed that he was booked to ride at two meetings.

Yes his stable is flying Jac, he’s worth the watch until the bubble bursts. That was hard
luck MOM and Raymo, it was close at the finish. I was disappointed with Remarkable, but
something was clearly wrong and he was rightly pulled up. He’s obviously delicate, having
been off the course for 18 months, I just hope he is okay.
