<br>"It seemed inevitable somehow that he’d die that way and that shouldn’t happen"
Sorry Burroughhill, I really cannot see how you can draw that conclusion to the end of Venn Ottery, anymore than you can about hundreds of other horses who actually race to their limits on a regular basis.
Just my opinion.
<br>Maybe inevitable is too strong a word, but it didn’t come as a huge surprise. There was a certain "I thought that might happen" feeling about it, but maybe that’s just me.
February 11, 2007 at 19:59 #38086There has been nothing published to say this horse was put to sleep!
This horse has a terrible wind problem, and would suit a tongue tie, in which Mr Nicholls provided when in his care….then Mr Carter took him away and put him with smaller trainers and he never got the tie back on…..and he is a good ground horse, and with a wind problem he would have been under a great strain….<br>Foreman was reported to be very distressed after pulling up, AP jumped off of him…
And Dr Pritchard is a friend and my best friend is head girl there
February 11, 2007 at 21:58 #38087I’ve not heard any confirmation as it wasn’t mentioned on Teletext or Ceefax either.
I remember him running in the 2m Nov Chase on National day on only his fourth start under rules when he charged down to the first and did a triple somersault. The fall was so bad that day that he was incredibly lucky to get up.
And then when he went to Nicholls, Nicholls was quoted as saying ‘the first thing we had to do was get him fit, as when he arrived here he couldn’t get up the gallops.’
And then running him in the Queen Mother followed by the Gold Cup 2 days later.:o
In terms of being a racehorse, I believe that he was mistreated.

February 12, 2007 at 00:33 #38088Loved this horse, can remember at Hereford the Owner trying to keep Ruby on for the Queen Mother
R.I.P Venn :(
February 12, 2007 at 00:35 #38089Just think how far he could of gone if he’d stayed in the Nicholls camp
February 12, 2007 at 09:03 #38090The horse sadly sufferred a fractured pelvis. As we were leaving the course 15 minutes after the race we were held up by the horse ambulance as it very slowly made its way across the exit road and into the racecourse stables. Presumably the vets then decided that the kindest course of action was to put the old fella to sleep.
Like the majority of the posters on this thread, I feel that the horse had done more than enough to enjoy a happy retirement and should not have been racing.
February 12, 2007 at 09:20 #38091The details of this most unfortunate business are now up on the News section of the RP website
February 12, 2007 at 09:34 #38092From the RP:-
THE colourful career of the Oliver Carter–owned Venn Ottery has taken a final, fatal twist, with confirmation on Sunday that the 12-year-old had to be destroyed after fracturing his pelvis for a second time at Newbury on Saturday.
There had been some pre-race concern over the chaser, whose form had declined dramatically in point-to-points, being asked to compete with the stars in the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase.
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who saddled Venn Ottery to his only four victories, in a three-week spell in 2004, called it "an utter disgrace" in his Racing Post column on Saturday. And on Sunday he added: “When he goes a mile and a half, pulls up and then has to be put down afterwards, it’s terribly sad for the horse. I felt very strongly about him running and hopefully there will be some lessons learned from it.â€ÂÂ
February 12, 2007 at 09:43 #38093What on earth was he thinking about? If he’d recovered from a fractured pelvis before surely it would have been kinder to retire him then. Speechless!

That’s hard to say without knowing when the original injury occurred
February 12, 2007 at 10:34 #38095<br>Trainer’s comments from above make me even more angry about Carter’s actions.
February 12, 2007 at 10:38 #38096I’m sure that Sue Gardner has nothing to account for. She was told, point blank, that the horse had to run. <br>That write up does nothing to dissuade the betting public that OC is nothing but a bitter, cantankerous old codger who has shown himself in the lowest possible light.<br>I really want the HRA to act over this, if only for the integrity of racing.
February 12, 2007 at 11:10 #38097Why weren’t Sue Gardner’s concerns expressed publicly BEFORE the race, just as Nicholls were 2 years ago.
February 12, 2007 at 11:34 #38098Maybe she didn’t want to lose a potential owner? A small stable has to make a living somehow.
February 12, 2007 at 12:52 #38099what a sad story. the life that horse has endurred. Will be interesting to see if Carter tries to justify his actions.
February 12, 2007 at 13:35 #38100Out of everyone writing on this thread, you Griff are the only one to be speaking complete and utter rubbish.
This horse wastrying as hard as he could the other day and just couldnt go the gallop, he died after something he wasn’t able to do.
Maybe he did enjoy racing, but still makes no reason to retire the poor horse. My Grandfather still like walking but we have told him to stop going too far on his own after his very nasty falls, which could have killed him. What is the difference with Venn Ottery apart from the fact that unfortunately he was basically MADE to lose his life. If it hadn’t have happened the other day it was only a matter of time.
The horse couldn’t even go the gallop on 3mile point to points, so how do you expect him to go the gallop in a fiercly contested 2mile chase round a flast track like Newbury.
He was going as fast as he could!!
Oliver Carter is an old man himself who rarely goes racing because of his old age, if he can’t go racing, why should the poor horse? What would he have said the trainer made him go racing and stand on his feet all day.
The problem is here, the horse wasn’t able to say no………. no matter how much he probably wanted to.
Carter shouldn’t be allowed to own another horse again
February 12, 2007 at 13:44 #38101something has got to be done to stop this happening again.
