Entries out for what is becoming a more popular event every season.
Great to see it run in the memory of Houblon Des Obeaux this year…..

Not for the first time in this race, my attention is drawn to Theatre Guide. He was the one I wanted to see in here. Ran a cracker in this last year, only finding Houblon too good. He’ll come here off of the same mark, and I wouldn’t be too concerned about his low key prep, as he’s bounced back on more than one occasion. There must be a good chance that this is the season goal, and I think he looks overpriced.
At 14’s Vieux Lion Rouge looks interesting, and no surprise to see him bounce back after a relatively disappointing run in The Becher.
From my point of view, Vieux Lion Rouge wasn’t as disappointing in The Becher as Regal Flow. He had a few quid of mine on him, but he got no further than the first. I keep going back to him, although I’ve only ever bet him a couple of times. He shaped a lot better last time, and as I suspect that his price will hold, he’ll maybe be bet on the day.
Wild West Wind is another who appeals. He’s slowly coming back to his best, and he looks on a very handy mark. Must have a live chance.
To be honest, I could make a case for them all, and…..
Dark Flame
Rathlin Rose
Caroles Destrier
Smooth Stepper…and particularly Abolitionist All appeal, but can’t bet em all.
I’ll watch the market with the Tizzard horse, but not put any money down yet.
Theatre Guide 16’s
December 31, 2019 at 09:56 #1478597Bob, I like On Tour at 14-1, but Williams has 2 in the race, so I will probably hold off until Saturday.
December 31, 2019 at 19:58 #1478626Easily one of my favourite races of the whole season, perhaps already a top 3/5. It helps that it’s been very kind to me with Soll, Pete The Feat and Houblon Des Obeaux all giving me days to remember since its inception.
It’s not actually a race I look into with an eye for form or conditions, but rather a blind loyalty race. I’ve only bet personal favourites and suffice to say loyalty does pay off!
This year my votes go to Vieux Lion Rouge and Theatre Guide. The former has dropped a couple pounds for his Becher effort having proven that he can still perform over regulation fences at Chepstow in October while the former is back down to the mark that saw him run his two best races of last season, which included finishing second in this very race.
Last year’s race brought me to my knees and while this perhaps the weakest renewal of this race to date; it’s still a highlight and the best incentive the BHA has implemented in a very long while.
January 2, 2020 at 12:12 #1478774Final Decs in, and Rathlin Rose the only absentee from original entries.
Still no bet for me, and I’ll probably wait until Friday Night now.
January 3, 2020 at 22:00 #1478869Just sticking with the one here, it’s too tough for two or three this one….
Theatre Guide 18’s EW 4 Places
January 4, 2020 at 07:38 #1478906Dark Flame 6-1 ew 4 places.
Will likely run big if the first time cheekpieces have the desired effect.
January 4, 2020 at 10:19 #1478920Slightly peeved that Sandy Forster didn’t send down lightly raced Claud And Goldie for this one. However in a similar vein DARK FLAME has few miles on the clock and may have more in the tank than most.
January 4, 2020 at 11:39 #1478930I’ll go double handed here with Dark Flame and Caroles Destrier, both to win.
January 4, 2020 at 13:25 #1478946Dark Flame for me as well. I’ll also cover Abolitionist each way, he’s a massive price.
January 4, 2020 at 14:08 #1478949I think Burtons Well at 8/1 should run a big race here. He’s probably
still got more in his legs than most having had a relatively light campaign
over the years. I also think that Kings Odyssey is overpriced at 12/1.
He might have to put in a personal best off his mark, but he was tough at the
finish last time out at Warwick when upped to 3m. This might just suit him here.January 4, 2020 at 16:21 #1478955If jepeck hasnt won that after getting impeded by the loose horse I’d have needed a couple of weeks off betting hahaha
January 4, 2020 at 17:32 #1478960Well done if you backed him FF9, and welcome to TRF
January 4, 2020 at 17:38 #1478961Well I put him up in my daily lays and plays thread and have been on here a good while now
January 4, 2020 at 18:11 #1478963Lol, I can’t believe I just did that. Because the No1 was under your name, I thought we had a
second FinalFurlong and it was a first post. Zero out of ten for observations, apologies for being
a complete idiot
January 4, 2020 at 19:11 #1478965Hahaha no worries
