August 5, 2010 at 21:01 #311199Thought Tony the Head Groundsman at Carlisle was a really great guy.

Thought the reward for the 81 year old gate attendant was pretty poor
August 5, 2010 at 21:14 #311206Agreed. Very stingy.
August 5, 2010 at 21:29 #311208A really enjoyable watch!
Well impressed with Paul Fisher aswell, seems a really genuine all round guy and passionate for what he does, which is heartwarming as a keen racing fan.
It’s seems a general theme throughout this series though and something I’ve seen for myself over the years, that those at the bottom rung of the ladder give there all to do a cracking job for poor return and those at the top of the ladder seem to find it hard to understand how appreciated a little bonus here and there to reward those efforts is…
August 5, 2010 at 22:20 #311217There was an element of The Secret Millionaire about it – that is, the bargain basement version.

August 5, 2010 at 22:35 #311219Yes, enjoyable watch, but it would have been interesting to know what full-time job Steve was offered.
His passion and love for the sport meant he obviously done his ‘easy’ (no disprespect intended) job well on the 17 or so days he was required, but what full-time job would be available on the back of his good work?
However, the biggest question to come out of the show was why didn’t Sandown have a dishwasher?
August 5, 2010 at 22:42 #311220How can Paul Fisher be a good guy, he missed his four year old’s birthday …. for the third time in four years.
I thought the show was pretty hollow. What was the point of it again? EGO TRIP.
And that poor kid, "happy belated birthday present son, c’mon play tennis for the cameras, what’s your name again?" He reminisced a fair bit about his own "working class" dad often, oh the irony.
Maybe he’ll be on Supernanny next, but I fear it’s Mr. Fisher who’ll be sent to the naughty step.

Which I thought was an emotional part of the programme with Paul Fisher clearly unhappy with himself over it. It’s a sad fact of life that many people get too wrapped up in their careers and neglect their children because of it.
I applaud him for being honest with himself in front of the camera’s and the viewing public, and hopefully for his family’s sake he will now realise which is the most important and will be there next year and every year after.
Lets not send him to the naughty step yet..eh?

They did have – he’s now back on the dole – replaced by a brand new Zannusi… apparently !

Could imagine if they did a real hidden camera version of what goes on behind the scenes when they are going for a touch, from the yard (Barney Curley’s would be fun) to the racecourse to the jockey’s changing rooms, through the owners and trainers bar, to during the evening meal in a country pub/restuarant after racing without anyone being aware they are being filmed……don’t think it would make the air somehow.
August 6, 2010 at 08:25 #311246So they have given sandown a dishwashing m/c hope they gave the dishwasher guy another job they did not mention that.

I agree it was easy watching but ultimately crap telly. As has been said earlier i thought i was watching "The Secret Millionaire"
If this is the way The Jockey Club is run then its no wonder racing is in the state its in!!

Now, that Fist, is what most of us would like to see. But as you say, it wouldn’t see the light of day.
Back to Paul Fisher: who else thinks that the man who recognised him during the Cheltenham festival, whom Paul pulled aside to inform him of what was going on, most probably informed one or two of his colleagues of Fisher’s true identity ?
And… as is often the case when non racing people make documentaries about Racing, the editing leaves a lot to be desired. Do they really think we wouldn’t notice that when they cut to the actual race scenes – irrespective of whether Paul Fisher was at Cheltenham or Sandown – they continually showed the same clip of the 2010 Gold Cup field passing the stands for the first time.

August 6, 2010 at 09:21 #311256The funniest part of this comedy was the Manageress of the Seafood Restaurant pretending not to know Paul from their previous 5 yrs of working together!! That just about typifies what the Jockey Club think of the level of intelligence of Joe Mug Punter Public! As for the £50 a head brigade looking down their noses at the staff, again did nothing but show how racing caters for the Rich and couldn"t give a monkeys for those at the bottom of the ladder! The programme only confirmed what a divide there is between us and them, what "them" need to realise is they need us more than their narrow minds can envisage!

Yep, noticed that … lazy editing … when they were at Sandown and stated "it’s the last race of the day at Sandown" and showed Imperial Commander jumping the last at Cheltenham … trivial but irritating nevertheless !!

Nice to see the cynics hard at work here. Just one question TAPK …… If what you’re suggesting is true how do you explain the genuine looking reaction from the restaurant manager who exclaimed "Ohhh I made him wash dishes" or words to that effect? Do you really think she’s that good an actress? I’ll quantify my curiosity by saying I also thought it strange that the manager worked with the COO for five years previously and had no idea who he was.
I commend the COO for exposing himself in this way. At times he came across as a crap dad who’d rather enjoy the perks of the job, wining and dining on racedays, than being with his offspring. He did seem to be trying very hard to endear himself to the workforce though. I hope it was all genuine and not just posturing.
Not sure what more folks expect from an employee of the month award. At least the old fellow didn’t get a crappy plaque and a photo on the wall at headquarters or a voucher for Tesco.
