Since switching to cable last year, I tend to watch more racing than anything else on television. Initially, I was quite impressed with one particular presenter and was quick to defend any criticism of him. However I now feel quite uncomfortable with some of his ‘banter’ with colleagues, which seems somewhat acerbic. I can’t really tell whether there’s a distinct prickliness in evidence? Does he really believe he’s the bees knees or in real-life is he quite a modest guy, or am I just misinterpreting everything and in actual fact they all get on brilliantly? It would be unkind to mention the guy’s name but some of you will know who I’m referring to.
Is there a hierarchy of presenters, in terms of seniority or expertise or are most just too polite/gentlemanly to give as good as they get?
(Incidentally, this thread is not aimed at any TRF members who might be observing.)May 11, 2009 at 21:39 #226991Think it’s a case that the vast majority of them disappear up their own backside rather quickly. They tend to forget that they are on a minority channel with a couple of thousand people watching and think they’re giants of broadcasting.
One man in particular who came on the scene four or five years ago to great acclaim is now so pleased with himself that the mute button goes on between races. Unless I have the bad Luck to lose the remote control that is.May 11, 2009 at 21:40 #226992"It would be unkind to mention the guy’s name "
It’s a kind of a waste of a thread if you don’t. Incidentally i’m rubbish with names in horse racing, so a picture would be better !
I don’t mind anyone in horse racing. You and a few other on here are fuss pots Ken !
May 11, 2009 at 22:05 #226999Yes Graeme, you might have a point there, I might be just an old "fuss pot" though I prefer to think it’s more a case of not being entirely comfortable with people on the box taking advantage of and abusing their position by belittling their colleagues in public. It’s a form of verbal bullying. When it appears to me to be happening on television then the "fuss pot" in me does tend to reach out and feel for the person on the receiving end who is not really in a position to defend themselves.
My question and the thread was more to do with the hierarchy. Naming individuals is irrelevant and would serve no useful purpose. Those that know, know. Those that don’t know, don’t need to know.May 11, 2009 at 22:17 #227001

Given the references you make to a particular person, Ken, your opening post far from addresses the mere subject of presenting hierarchy (though I presume mulls74’s subtle grammatical error is an accurate clue).
And as for ‘those who don’t know, don’t need to know’ – what complete and utter drivel.
May 11, 2009 at 22:19 #227003I know that no names are being mentioned at the moment which is natural incase anything incrimminating was said.
Any chance this person whoever it is has Nicked their Luck just once to often.
May 11, 2009 at 22:31 #227006Well, it seems I’ve proved my point. Verbal abuse isn’t confined to television. It’s live and kicking here on TRF. It’s obvious from some of your tones that it’s a case of birds of a feather….
First paragraph: rhetorical questions
Second paragraph: questions you seem unable to answerNever mind guys. You can’t be perfect all the time.
May 11, 2009 at 22:47 #227011Ken – some people would see something as bullying, others would see it as banter. It’s hard to know who you’re talking about, because i’m ‘not in the know’. Are you talking about James Willoughby ?
You’ve kinda shot yourself in the foot by saying "Verbal abuse isn’t confined to television. It’s live and kicking here on TRF". I’m looking at this thread and i’m struggling to see any personal abuse. Lighten up sir !
May 11, 2009 at 22:59 #227016Right. I don’t want to fall out with anyone on here. I boobed. Big mistake putting the thread up. Just verbalising my irritation. A thread in haste…is simply a waste. Sorry for wasting your time and effort. Let the thread drop off please. Apologies to anyone offended.
KMay 11, 2009 at 23:15 #227026Ken, you are beginning to look a bit of a plonker yourself, i cant believe
you fell for Caledons patter, i had you down as a bit wiser than that! As far
as exposing Nick Luck as a right old smarty pants, and i could have knocked him out yesterday, when he personally decided to throw Inxile
out, one has to say that Nick is as knowledgable as anyone in the racing
presenter fraternity, he commands his soldiers well! Even McCririck calls
him Lord Snooty! Nick still gets the last laugh though!May 11, 2009 at 23:20 #227027Ken – some people would see something as bullying, others would see it as banter. It’s hard to know who you’re talking about, because i’m ‘not in the know’. Are you talking about James Willoughby ?

May 11, 2009 at 23:23 #227028This thread looks like being a Pilgarlic/Peaty Sandy style stayer just like the Clare Balding and An Apology threads were.
May 11, 2009 at 23:32 #227031Not just slating Marble, i like to praise aswell, which gives me the opportunity to say,
LYDIA HISLOP RULES OK!May 11, 2009 at 23:36 #227032Antepostking
How can you have the temerity to suggest I fell for Caledon’s patter?
Not only did I lead him into a false sense of security and a cul de sac, if you care to peruse the final post on that thread, you could hardly fail to recognise that I had him sussed from the outset. Not unlike yourself, Sir.Haven’t the foggiest about who JW and NL are?

Not only did I lead him into a false sense of security and a cul de sac, if you care to peruse the final post on that thread,KEN, I had him sussed from his very first sentance! You old boy was
snapping away at his carrot for 13 pages, thinking he was the guy who found the Golden Egg! dissapointed in you! i hope you are a better judge of Horses!!May 11, 2009 at 23:50 #227035I knew what Lydia was destined for as a writer when you were still in nappies mate.

Used to read her articles in the standard back in the day, good stuff, very shrewd.

Marble if you were a race horse, you would have to be Sadlers Wells!
Gods gift to fillies!May 11, 2009 at 23:52 #227036Regrettably, a failure all-round, it seems. In life, love, and the gee gees.
But looking on the bright side, at least my name’s not Cal.
Cheers
