Hi all
I have no idea if this is a repeat and what it will actually be like, but just a heads up for any interested parties:
11/03/10 9pm, 1 hr, BBC 4
Race horses: StoryvilleWhat might it be like to be a horse? Not just any horse, but a top-end racehorse in Ireland? We follow three promising horses over the course of one rather difficult racing year.
March 10, 2010 at 06:41 #281444Thanks Arabesque; see Thread ‘Must See TV’ further down the board. But it’s good that you’ve bumped up the subject again because it sounds as if it could be an interesting watch.
KMarch 10, 2010 at 10:01 #281453BBC4 are also showing ‘Barbados at the Races’ [repeated Friday night]. This is a 4 part series that started on Tuesday night. The Storyville programme on Thursday features Paul Nolans stable and focuses on Joncol, Ardalan and Cuan na Grail. It’s on at 9.00
repeated at 2.05 in the morning [think I’m going to be pretty shattered at work on Friday; I’m not missing it, and my I player doesn’t work properly]. Just checked; it’s repeated on Sunday 14th March 23.45. Bit late, but I’ve got next week off work anyway. Really looking forward to this programme.
March 10, 2010 at 10:03 #281454It’s at least the third thread about this now. BBC4 viewing figures will be through the roof.
March 10, 2010 at 10:07 #281455And so they should be; BBC4 one of the best things ever imo!

Absolutely. They might get seven or even eight viewers now.
Half the decent stuff on there goes on BBC2 sooner or later.
March 11, 2010 at 23:06 #281802I watched it. Good stuff.
A lot of swearing from Joncol’s trainer, Paul Nolan. An awful lot of swearing.
Why the subtitles though ?
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
March 11, 2010 at 23:19 #281803Maybe because of the accents?
I didn’t find it difficult to understand what anyone was saying, but maybe some may have done..
Really enjoyed the programme anyway and it’s a real shame there’s not more like it on. I’d like to see something similar, but as like a weekly series on for maybe 2-3 months building up to something like the Cheltenham Festival?
It would make for great viewing, but I doubt whether there’s a big enough potential audience out there?
Really looking forward to seeing Joncol next time too, looks a horse of immense potential to me.
March 12, 2010 at 00:24 #281819It was quite a gentle programme I thought. Entertaining, interesting & I think my missus wants a horse now.
They had to have subtitles as most BBC4 viewers have never heard a regional accent before.
March 12, 2010 at 00:55 #281821I thought it was a good programme and enjoyed watching it.
However, watching Paul Nolan talking to the different owners I was left with the impression that Kate Fox’s (I think that’s her name, author of the Racing Tribe) description of Trainers as the Shaman of the Racing Tribe was very well observed.
There was also something else that left me feeling a bit uncomfortable but I don’t know enough about it to comment….so I’ll leave it for the moment.
March 12, 2010 at 09:57 #281838thought it was ok
lacked a bit of depth
meaning training methods,owners,race planning
i would of liked it if they followed a horse being purchased and following his career and training and ownersMarch 12, 2010 at 10:12 #281840My wife enjoyed the programme which is a good sign as she has only a passing interest in racing through my own interest. What fascinated her in particular was the characters of the different horses shown. It’s easy for us to analyse bare form of horses, but this programme and similar are a timely reminder that we are following thinking, feeling beings rather machines.
I felt that lack of a programme commentary, with captions explaining what was going on, was a good thing. It rather let the viewer make their own minds up about what was going on rather having banal comments.

The three legged dog?
Great to have something a bit different to watch, more would be very welcome although i wont hold my breath.
Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 12, 2010 at 11:39 #281860A real opportunity missed IMO.
I would be amazed if the intention was to get people interested in racing and even more amazed if that was the outcome.
Enjoyed the photography of the beautiful horses and I absolutely love the Irish turn of phrase and the uniquely charming and amusing way that the Irish can make swearing and cursing sound, so there was genuinely plenty to enjoy for me but as for making the racing world look interesting……….I’d be surprised and a lack of a commentary certainly didn’t help.March 12, 2010 at 11:53 #281866A lot of swearing from Joncol’s trainer, Paul Nolan. An awful lot of swearing.
Thanks for the warning – glad I missed it.
If I can get by without swearing what’s Paul Nolan’s excuse? It is not as if he is a comedian trying to get a cheap laugh.
The fact that some people enjoyed it is indicative of the fact we seem to accept/ignore almost anything these days. That is why the country is falling apart – still as long as it isn’t happening on your doorstep – yet.
March 12, 2010 at 11:58 #281868There really wasn’t a huge amount of swearing in the programme. Aileen remarked how little there had been, although about fifteen seconds after that Nolan let rip with half a dozen swear words in one sentence. In context it generally wasn’t a problem.

Rob
That must have been quite an achievement to get six in one sentence.
Would people be happy if next week’s Channel 4 coverage were littered with swear words? Why is this deemed acceptable just because the programme went out after nine?
