NAS need to irrigate the grass continuously to keep it growing.
Even in the winter the humidity is so low that surface water evaporates quickly. The sand base means that going is consistent and hardly changes from meeting to meeting – there is not sufficient clay material to ever make it firm or soft.
Grass is a Bermuda hybrid planted in local sand termed ‘sweet soil’. Top-dressed with an inch of peat moss in the summer . The grass is kept at six inches during the racing season and is over-sown with rye in the autumn.
