GeeveemFebruary 16, 2008 at 15:08 #143844How come Naunton Brook is actually running in the 3.10 at Wincanton but on the Racing Post site he was down to run in the 2.45 at Haydock.
I picked him for the 2.45 race.

February 16, 2008 at 15:11 #1438463.10 at Wincanton,he was declared twice with preference for that race.
February 16, 2008 at 15:24 #143848Surely they must make a decision before the day of the races themselves? ? ?
February 16, 2008 at 16:23 #143867Double declarations at two different meetings are by no means uncommon, particularly when there is a doubt about one/both meetings taking place due to adverse weather (frost) or likely going changes due to rain. Naunton Brook wasn’t declared a non-runner at Haydock until 12.30 which was admittedly a little late as Wincanton passed an inspection at 11.00.
On the RP racecard double declarations are posted as ‘preferred engagement’ and ‘also engaged at’: NB’s ‘preferred engaement’ was Wincanton.
Due to 48hr declarations made on Friday for Sunday, horse’s doubly declared on both Saturday and Sunday is quite common, with the result that Sunday tends to suffer from non-runners who raced on the Saturday.
It’s all legal and above board but for the punter not an ideal scenario. I just wish trainers would declare their horse a non-runner as soon as intentions are decided.
Edit: Incidentally, double decs, along with multiple 5-day decs can be useful to punters in that they suggest a trainer is keen to run a fit horse, and if the ‘preferred engagement’ is over a different trip/on different going/different class than the ‘also engaged at’ then it’s a helpful insight into the conditions under which a trainer would prefer his charge to run in.
All grist to the punting mill
February 16, 2008 at 17:06 #143879Thanks guys.
I’m only angry because i selected him for the competition and thought he would run well in the Haydock race.
February 16, 2008 at 17:12 #143882I sympathise, Gareth – the Haydock race seemed a more logical option than taking on borderline Gold Cup aspirants over a trip shy of his best.

February 16, 2008 at 23:35 #144017Those were my thoughts too Jeremy.
Thought the race at Haydock looked ideal for him.
