no, before that group existed – for that angle, think early 1970s.

    So:

the term that came to be spin-translated as “Iron Lady” on the west of the iron curtain was, on the east side of that curtain:

-something probably said in front of the children

-would be known to English speakers through one of The Five and/or an English rock group of the early 1970s

    Baba Yaga?

She flies around on a giant mortar or broomstick, kidnaps (and presumably eats) small children

    (Wikipee :) )

    That’s it.

“Zelazna Baba” is the variant of “Baba Yaga” that was used by the Soviets.

“Zelazna” means iron in the sense of enduring / lived forever in harsh conditions / old and weathered.

“Baba” means crone /witch / evil woman who lives in the woods and fields.

Parents across Eastern Europe tell their children to behave or else Zelazna Baba / Baba Yaga will come and do bad things to them.

The spin-translation “Iron Lady” suggests respect by the Soviets of a serious adversary.

The reality however is that “Zelazna Baba” was a mocking reference that Mrs Thatcher’s threats were to be taken about as seriously as those of a mythical character used to frighten small kids.

And yet the spin-translation has taken on a life of its own.

Oh, I was thinking she may have been called Stalina, a female version of Stalin (Man Of Steel), or Lenina, a female version of Lenin (Man Of Iron).

Interesting Wit, thanks. Wonder what the Eastern Bloc made of the term ‘Iron Curtain’? :)

The residents of Perth and Dawlish find a home-from-home in this pub, and over there in a corner is Nassim Taleb pondering his glass darkly

    The pub’s name please?

Too quick Pompete, well done :)

Perth (Australia) has two black swans on its coat of arms, and the bird features heavily in the folklore of Western Australia generally

Dawlish (Devon) has a resident population of black swans

Nassim Taleb is author of The Black Swan

If you’re ever in York I recommend lunch – liquid or otherwise – at The Black Swan 23 Peasholme Green

Sorry Drone, I knew the book and Perth so took a guess :D

During the fine weather last week I was in the garden with a piece of string tied between two garden chairs. I also had with me a piece of wood with notches in and an egg timer.

    Q. What was I doing?

I believe someone from Eastern Europe used it before Churchill.

A good guess but no, however, I did have the chairs and string up lined up north to south and the piece of wood was at a right angle to the string so a shadow was cast on it.
