Past the mid-point now in TRF voting for our annual Racing Forum awards. If you haven’t voted yet still time to get your votes in – here’s how things are looking at the moment in the various categories –

Jumps Trainer – Paul Nicholls in a clear lead
Villain of the Year – BBC narrowly ahead of our very own ‘Tom’

Hero of the Year – Henry Cecil out in front but being chased by Denman, Dai Walters and the Qayak stable lass (does anyone know her name btw?)

Owner – Christopher Tsui has a good lead

Broadcaster of the Year – Nick Luck has his nose in front but close up are Ted Walsh, Lydia Hislop and Matt Chapman

Flat Horse – One horse race!

Journalist of the Year – Alan Lee leads narrowly from Greg Wood with Lydia Pearce and Andrew Hughes on their heels

TRF Poster of the Year – looks a two horse race with Drone the front runner. Glenn (timeform squiggle and all) is in a clear second and could still peg things back if he responds to the whip in the final furlong.

Commentator – Richard Hoiles a fence clear

Racecourse – Cheltenham out in front

Flat Trainer – John Oxx leads but Richard Fahey going well in second just ahead of HRA Cecil.

Jumps Horse – A repeat of the Gold Cup with Kauto Star leading Denman

Ride of the year – AP McCoy’s effort on Wichita Lineman looks home and hosed

Flat Jockey – Rumours are that Mick Kinane’s recent retirement announcement was tactically timed to engender support for his vote in the TRF Flat Jockey of the Year award! If so, it has worked. He’s a few votes clear of Ryan Moore as things stand.

One to Watch – the most eagerly contested category of all with a host of them in a line. Rhys Flint and Paddy Flood are neck and neck but the Paul Struthers/BHA combo are close up, as are Giles Hawkins, Sam Twiston Davies with another group of runners charging close behind.

Jump Jockey – Two horse race, somewhat predictably, with Ruby Walsh ahead by three votes at the minute.

Glenn certainly wouldn’t have a timeform squiggle. He is extremely consistent.

DJ – doesn’t the double squiggle mean consitently recaltriant?!

Is Ferdy still at war with your organisation Paul? I gather one or two posters here think some occasional return fire wouldn’t go amiss.

Off topic slightly – Paul – what are careers like at the BHA at the moment in terms of graduates? I applied for a generic graduate role last year but didn’t hear anything back – if I gave you my email address could you or someone at the BHA get back to me regarding this possibly? Thanks.

At the moment I don’t think so.

Don’t forget Mr Murphy appeared in front of the Disc Panel earlier this year:

Sadly the Timeform double squiggle is merely defined as ‘so temperamentally unsatisfactory to be not worth a rating’. Oh for a return to the days when tailpieces such as ‘resolute in only refusing to race; can run a bit but won’t’, ‘an arrant coward’, ‘a stubborn, lazy, wilful pig of a horse or my personal favourite, ‘a well-bred thief who will never win again.’

All these appear in Papal Bull’s Racehorses of 2008 essay.

Is that really the BHA’s idea of a competitive salary?

    Especially in London.

None of those would have looked out of place in Hunter Chasers and Point-to-Pointers at its most acid, either. Splendidly dismissive stuff there, DJ!

Is it just me, but I love those sort of horses? Perhaps we should start a thread about them.
