Cheers Marb. You just cant trust Johnsons horses. I dont think he trained Queens logic. It might have been channon. Dont get me going on him.He is not the hardest to predict, he is impossible.. I wont have a bet if he has a horse in it..The term " back to form " is used a lot after 1 of his horses win ( usually as second string)..

True but wouldn’t have to stand on a box to see over Jonjo’s head and could put Willie Carson in his coat pocket

I’ve always been bemused by Turnell, who was one of the most stylish jockeys riding in the 70’s, but used Luke Harvey as stable jockey and put up Philip Hide when Luke retired!

For me the hardest to read is Ferdy Murphy – he’s obviously a jounalist’s delight as he’s already with a quote, but as he seems to think every chaser he trains is a potential Gold Cup horse, what he says is no help at all. He does have his share of good horses, but I’m not convinced he knows which ones they are!

On the flat, I’d agree it’s Channon. As an example, I backed Borderlescott at Goodwood running off a mark of 88 and he was beaten by Channon’s Pic Up Sticks, who’d finished 14/17 and 14/14 on his two previous starts. It didn’t seem to be a fluke and the Channon horse wasn’t backed, but there’s no way you could have predicted the result and it didn’t make much sense on subsequent form either, given Borderlescott went on to win twice more that season and the Stewards Cup the next year to confirm he handled the track.

    Hi Everyone,

As I have decided to specialise this coming flat I have decided to focus on a small number of trainers to follow but am having difficulty finding any publications with decent stats to help sort the wheat out from the chaff. The RP do one but it only covers 1 year.
Does anyone who follows particular trainers have know of any other publications which will help.

    Thanks

I would agree that Mick Channon is ‘difficult to read’, though I find the following a particularly useful rule of thumb with him: if it’s odds-on, lay it.

He has though, I notice, started putting videos of his horses’ workouts on his website. The site itself is fairly poor, but I thought this was an interesting feature.

Other than Channon, I tend to be wary of Phillip Hobbs, Mark Johnston, Richard Hannon, Evan Williams, Alan Swinbank, Gary Moore (moreso than the rest), Henrietta Knight, Jonjo O’Neill and Richard Guest/Lee/Phillips. And, on occasion, the female trifecta of Emma Lavelle, Venetia Williams and Lucinda Russell.

Howard Johnson is very difficult predict.

His horses always seem to be handicapped to the hilt.

Even when he`s in good form generally I usually find a Henderson horse that runs like a hairy dog

As for Tim Easterby, I find his runners to be pure guess work.
