The Tote Ten To Follow is a funny old comp.

In 2002 I was 4th place on the 2nd night of the Chelt Fest. I was counting my money.

For the following 4 comps, I invested silly money trying to win the thing.

Face it – its a lottery. When I did well, (5 rs ago, and a couple of printed names in the followin gtwo years) I thought I was the kiddy. I wasnt.

At the time you had a number of "bankers" who were blind guaranteed 25 pointers. I mean Gold Cup, Cmp Hdle, Queen Mother etc etc. So all you had to do was get the winner of the Hennessey, the Paddy Power etc etc. Yeah, right, its that easy.

The jumps tournament enjoyed a coincidental boost in its pool during this period, and now it is advertised as a winnable pot with that Fitzerland goon at the head of the media onsluaght. Face it – he won because he invested an outrageous amount of money on a number of perms and got lucky. Sad thing is, he still does it, even though he doesn’t realise the goalposts are shifting.

You wold be be better of saving your hard earned and sticking on the next fav at Hollywood Park than investing in the TTF. Trust me.

No wonder you fail dismally at the TTF, Lenny. You’ll get nowhere if your bankers guarantee you 25 points a piece – ideally you want all your runners to pick up fifty points apiece with a handful picking up more than that or you won’t make it into the top 100! The winner last year had 731 points [with the main leaderboard going down to 618 points], so guaranteeing a few that’ll net you 25 points ain’t gonna get ya far!

I must admit my last two efforts at this comp have been truly pathetic so am just hoping for the best this time round.
It’s a long time since my one appearance in the top ten of a monthly leaderboard (the nearest I ever got to winning anything in the comp).

At the moment, I just KNOW I’ve got the winning entry. Come 1435 Saturday I’ll know that I’ve done me cash for another year….

    Hi Lenny,

I was fortunate enough to come joint 1st in 2004 (would have won outright but for a meandering run by Rhinestone Cowboy to beat Rooster Booster at Aintree)

It was my first time to entry, just doing two lines and I am ordinarily your stereotypical novice mug punter. I don’t have a tenth or even a hundredth of the knowledge of the people who post on here and don’t post that much myself as often my racing knowledge isn’t good enough to keep up with the discussion (although I do read a lot of them). Yet somehow I managed to win. So it is possible. Don’t be too dismissive.

I do think it is becoming harder to do well like you say, and naturally if you do hundered of entries you are more likely to win, but that goes without saying.

I have failed to come in the first ten million places in every year since  but take it as a bit of fun, if I don’t want to enter I don’t have to, and like Shadow Leader says, I’ll be all excited for 48hrs or so until Saturday afternoon when I accept that i’ve done my cash for another year.
