I’m disappointed I won’t see him in the National but if he can put his best hoof forward and he takes to the fences I’m hoping for a nice e.w run from Battleoverdoyen

Via Dolorosa e/w at 40/1 (and some 55.0), despite running in the Scottish National last weekend.

His first two runs for the Pipes were over the national fences this winter – 4th in the Grand Sefton and he was racing prominently in the Becher when badly hampered and unseating at the 12th (the RP say ‘going easily’ when hampered but there was a long way to go). The mishap was absolutely no fault of his own.

Had his wind done in January and has won twice since. Just a pound higher now than when running in the Becher, Tom Scu takes the ride off just 10-2.

Races prominently which is a plus around here and he takes the fences well. That run last weekend isn’t ideal but he wasn’t pushed when the writing was on the wall, I’m sure they had this in mind. He did have some short breaks between races in France so hopefully he can take it. The Pipes are in good form (8 wins from last 15) and I think 40/1 is a very fair price with extra places.

Topped up Battleoverdoyen , also added Annamix , he,s turning into a cliff horse but there bits of form there that could see him run a big race , also may play ridersofthestorm but hanging off just now

I was left with five on this, and had to draw the line somewhere. Four’s bad enough.

Janika was the one that I ditched, as I’ve put him up enough over the years without actually betting him, so he was the obvious one. Still think he’ll run well, and I’ll cover him mid race should he look threatening.

No idea whether to take the eight places or not. Messy

I’m going with two win selections here, Senior Citizen 12-1 and Royal Rendevouz 11-1

Via Dolorosa 177; Senior Citizen 173; Foxy Jacks 171; Discordantly 171; Palmers Hill 169; Francky Du Berlais 167; Cobolobo 167

A wide open race but I’ll go with the top two. Via Dolorosa 33/1 went well for a long way in the Scottish National, has won off the back of a recent race in the past and has run well here. Senior Citizen 12/1 has placed in his last two runs around here and looks targetted at this race.

Just catching today’s action. What a ride by Sean Bowen on Mac Tottie. And, again, Spiritofthegames left too late. When will they learn? And, more prudently, when will I learn to not not back him each-way!

Anyway, I enjoyed the race so much that I watched the replay again (always so much to take in even second-time around). What a superb race – no casualties and a bit of drama when Foxy Jacks brought a couple down. If the National tomorrow is half as exciting then we’re in for a thrill. (I backed Royal Rendezvous who was going well until clouting the big open ditch and clearly didn’t enjoy it from there on in).

One factor of races on the National course that’s underestimated is that the race really develops and changes from the big ditch four out round that long bend to the second-last. Love that section of the course.
