Moon Racer never looked at it today. Well done to anyone who fancied Pingshou to come out 40 lengths better off with River Wylde today.

That’s the frustrating thing with horse racing. You find a way into the race (Moon Racer in this case) and want to take the favourite on. You identify the danger and go against him on the basis of the faster going. Moon Racer runs as you expect, Mount Mews runs as if softer/further would suit, so you’re correct twice so far. River Wylde travels up well in the race and all seems set fair, only for the horse to then fall apart like a Poundstretcher jigsaw and run miles behind his previous form with the easy winner.

Maybe River Wylde left something back at Cheltenham but for whatever reason he never ran to his form today. My wife backed Pingshou for no other reason than that it sounded like a Pokemon character my daughter used to have a plush toy of. Maybe that’s the method for the future.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

LOL Steve!! these wives have their own way of picking horses that’s for sure!!

I have a theory about River Wylde inasmuch that it has one burst of speed and it has to be used wisely and in a lot of cases he has to be in exactly the right place to use it which aint gonna happen that often!

I wasn’t sure what was amiss with River Wylde today. Maybe he is a horse that needs finessing in a finish but I feel he weakened too badly today for that to be the reason.

The Racing Post gave him as running 11 lbs below his mark today. I felt it was a good bit more than that but the Racing Post have chosen to frame it as River Wylde running 11 lbs below form and Pingshou improving by 14 lbs.

You can argue the chances of a horse having improved or not, but, on balance, with Pingshou having looked about the mid 130’s in ratings, and having an official mark of 133 for his last three runs and a peak RPR of 135 coming into today, it takes a little stretch of credibility to buy into him suddenly being a 149 rated hurdler.

Even Colin Tizzard said he was as surprised as anyone at the racecourse to see his horse win like that today. The fact that Mount Mews may not have been suited by trip/going today, Pingshou could just be flattered on his new mark. AP MCCoy said just before the race that this may not have been a sufficient stamina test for Mount Mews and he remained convinced of that afterwards in the review.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

River Wylde didn’t hurdle well, looked awkward and a bit unhappy. Sore back?

By contrast I liked NJH’s other Supreme runner Beyond Conceit today- step up in trip and headgear did the trick and he got into a nice rhythm and jumped well. I don’t know if he would get 3m anywhere other than good ground flat track and wouldn’t be surprised if they give Cheltenham a miss next year to keep him fresh for this meeting.

I thought about taking the 25/1 Pingshou before visiting the Supreme again and discarding the idea. Despite what Tizzard said he didn’t run well and was struggling from an early stage. Jumping looked a real effort.

Three possible theories to explain today’s win. Power for Coleman; the relatively easy time on the front end and several of the more fancied runners bombing out.

River Wylde’s jumping was anything but slick and I didn’t think was ever going to pick up. Not sure what the noseband was about? Can’t remember seeing a Henderson horse run in one before.
