I find that when there are multiple meetings (let’s say 4 or more), I get confused by what horses to bet on. My judgement goes to pot and I end up changing my mind on bets. Bugger!
Your equating the cost of a bet with the cost of a pint of milk there Dave, a comparison that cant be made. My pint of milk may now cost 27% more than it did in 2000, but the cost of my £1 bet in 2009 costs exactly the same as it did in 2000. My winnings will buy me less and the net worth to the levy is less but punters still had to lose 1 billion in 2008 to generate 100 million for the levy, just as they had to lose 600 million to generate 60 million in 2000. The cost of betting is not index linked!

The 2000 £1 has devalued at say 3% a year since 2008, ie. it is worth less. On average everyone is earning more (doing less for their £1) and as a consequence it can buy less .. so the Levy must increase to keep in line with inflation in order to be worth the same in real terms.
That’s why the government increases the value of pensions, state benefits, the minimum wage, etc .. every year. The Levy is no different.

You have the concept of price and value mixed up Dave. A win single I bought in a betting shop for £1 in 2000 still costs £1 pound today, there has been no erosion in the purchasing power of my £1 when I go to place a bet. It hasn’t been subject to inflation. It cant be. There is no bookmakers price index to measure it against. The variation in the price of a bet is governed solely by the variation in the bookmakers overround.

The only difference there’s less of it. Midweek betting fare, no more no less, just like its always been. Racing that has largely sustained an industry for generations.
Anyone who thinks a regular diet of the above can maintain a 100 million levy these days has no idea where the levy comes from in the first place. Anyone who thinks more racing equates to less class in the thoroughbred racehorse is wrong.
Football, Cricket, Formula One, Rugby all expanding and doing fine. Well marketed, and presented with insatiable demand for their products it seems. Racings answer….lets become more reclusive, at least the paddock gazers are happy.
